The cool thing about genuinely funny people is that they can get laughs out of doing the same thing over and over and over again. When mere mortals are intentionally repetitive, they usually get punched in the face. On Tuesday night, Paul Rudd appeared on Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show with what he claimed was a clip from the highly anticipated Anchorman 2. “This is going to go crazy viral,” said Conan, setting up what has been a running joke between the two men for a while now.
Instead of a glimpse into the world of Ron Burgundy and Brian Fantana, viewers at home were treated to the runaway wheelchair scene from Mac and Me, a clip that Rudd has used before on Conan’s show as a substitute for whatever movie he’s actually promoting. The best part: after Rudd apologized for belaboring the running gag, he did show an Anchorman 2 clip. Or did he?

In case your Anchorman 2 itch still needs to be scratched, here’s the teaser trailer, which is still funny all these months later.

If you weren’t around for the premiere of Late Night with David Letterman in 1982, then chances are you’re not aware how much he — and the team of writers, producers and comic talent that put on the show five nights a week — changed the face of late-night TV. Dave challenged and, in some cases, blew up the conventions of the talk-show genre and rewrote the playbook that Conan O’Brien, Craig Ferguson and the Jimmys — Kimmel and Fallon — are using today.
Now on CBS, Letterman is still going strong, and, in 1991, his success begat Worldwide Pants Inc, which has produced the television series Everybody Loves Raymond and Ed. The company’s CEO Rob Burnett began as an intern on Late Night in 1985 and rose to become executive producer of the current CBS incarnation of Letterman’s show as well as the co-creator, with Jon Beckerman, of Ed and Knights of Prosperity.
Although Worldwide Pants made its first foray into film production with the 2005 indie feature Strangers with Candy, Burnett has expanded the company’s presence in the medium with two projects that also involve him personally. In September, he made his directorial debut with We Made This Movie, a funny, unsentimental coming-of-age comedy that he co-wrote with Beckerman. Worldwide Pants is a producer of that film as well as Burnett’s next picture, which was announced in mid-October: an adaptation of Jonathan Evison’s novel, The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving.
Movieline spoke to Burnett about his move into film, which, as you might expect from someone who cut his show-business teeth on Dave’s groundbreaking NBC show, has been anything but conventional. Working with a miniscule budget and determined to remain true to the film’s do-it-yourself plot, Burnett and Beckerman worked with…

May the farce be with you! In the wake of news that Disney will be producing more Star Wars movies as a result of its acquisition of George Lucas’ LucasFilm on Tuesday, the geniuses at Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco have posted some very funny parody posters of what the interstellar franchise will look like under the influence of the House of Mouse.
I’m partial to the Boba Fett-meets-Buzz-Lightyear hybrid, but the image of the Jawas taking over for the Seven Dwarfs and spiriting off a comatose Snow White is a keeper, too. The full Boba poster and a third featuring the characters from Peter Pan silhouetted against the Death Star can be found at the Team Coco website. There’s such great material for satire here that I have a feeling that this is just the beginning. Walt Disney as Darth Sidious, anyone?

After throughly enjoying Adult Swim alumnus Jim Tozzi’s Psychocats parody trailers for Seven Psychopaths (which made me even more focused and productive in the office), I’m counting the minutes until some new-media smart-ass takes this fun Wreck-It Ralph clip and makes it funnier by splicing in some of Sarah Silverman and John C. Reilly’s less, um, family-oriented comedy.
Reilly plays the title character of the Rich Moore-directed Disney animated picture, which hits cineplexes on Nov. 2. He’s Wreck-It Ralph, a vide0-game villain from a Donkey Kong-like game who tires of being the bad guy and goes on a vision quest of sorts to prove that he can be a hero. His journey takes him through a couple of game scenarios, including Sugar Rush, a candy-themed Mario Kart homage, where he encounters Vanellope von Schweetz, a cutesy voiced cookie full of arsenic. In this clip, Vanellope proceeds to needle Ralph by, for instance, asking him if he’s “a hobo” and commenting on his “freakishly big” hands until he pronounces her “freakishly annoying.”
<div> </div>
Perhaps because the word freakish gets tossed around, I found myself hearkening back to these YouTube clips featuring Silverman on Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show and Reilly on Adult Swim as the genius Dr. Steve Brule. In the right hands their words coming out of Ralph and Vanellope’s computer-generated mouths could be pretty diabolically funny. If any Final Cut jockey out there is up for the challenge, I’d love to see the results.

Speaking of old….Dax Shepard deployed one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book on the Conan show on Monday when he diverted attention from the lame box-office performance of his movie Hit and Run by poking fun at the aging action stars who kicked his cinematic ass, the cast of The Expendables 2.
Shepard told host Conan O’Brien that the cast of the Sylvester Stallone-directed The Expendables 2 were “all show and no go” when it came to their collective well-muscled appearance. “It looks like the zombie apocalypse is saving the earth,” Shepard said in reference to the veteran ensemble.
Alas, Hit and Run might have benefited from scenes of a zombie apocalypse, or something that would have raised moviegoer interest. The picture, which also starred Bradley Cooper and Shepard’s real-life girlfriend Kristen Bell grossed just $5.9 million in its initial five-day opening. The movie ranked 10th for the weekend, well behind The Expendables 2, which saw a $13.5 million weekend and a 15-day domestic box-office take of $52.3 million.
Feeling a little insecure there, Dax?

Last night Will Ferrell — excuse me, boys and girls, San Diego newsman, jazz flautist, and scotch enthusiast Ron Burgundy — dropped by Conan O’Brien’s set to jam, give Conan unsolicited grooming tips, and OH YES — make an announcement: “As of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel to Anchorman.” Caress some mahogany, smoke a little tea, and rejoice the good word with a clip of the historic announcement!
According to Deadline, the pieces finally fell into place on the long-hoped for Anchorman 2, which will be directed by Adam McKay and written by McKay and Ferrell. Also according to Deadline, Nikki Finke used to own a set of Anchorman bobbleheads. Great Odin’s beard, let’s toast to the unifying power of Ron Burgundy!

For a movie with a comedic premise this simple – essentially: can you believe we made a movie with a premise this simple? – Casa de Mi Padre can feel pretty exhausting. Its comic arsenal is laid bare by the end of the credits sequence: There is Will Ferrell playing a Mexican ranchero and speaking Spanish; Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal as narco peacocks; telenovela melodrama played absurdly straight; self-conscious B-budget goofing; and plenty of guns and flames for ambiance. Are you not entertained?
A credits sequence or SNL sketch or Funny Or Die video is the natural habitat for this kind of hit-and-run goof. Conan O’Brien, playing the fiery Conando, made his telenovela riff Noches de Pasión a regular feature on his show a few years back, and a few minutes is really all it takes to get the job done. Ferrell has worked with his collaborators – director Matt Piedmont and writer Andrew Steele – at both SNL and Funny or Die, and like last year’s Your Highness, Casa de Mi Padre has the feeling of a very inside joke. The story of how the cowardly dupe Armando Alvarez (Ferrell) defends his family from drug-war fallout is told in terms so self-consciously broad that the “joke” becomes obscure again, suggesting that rarefied sense of what’s funny that comedians often develop after a couple of decades on the job.
For most of the rest of us it quickly becomes a struggle to find – or desperately root out – humor in much of the re-heated genre spoofing. The house of the title belongs to Miguel (Pedro Armendáriz Jr., who passed away this December), father to Armando and the prodigal Raul (Luna), who returns home at the beginning of the film with a fiancée to die for named…
