Last we heard from the team behind The Worst Movie EVER!, filmmaker Glenn Berggoetz was receiving death threats as the movie’s historically bad box-office returns crept ever-so-incrementally higher. More than a month later, firmly ensconced in three-digit territory and finding new audiences seemingly every week, has WME!’s profile emerged at last from the freezing shadow of box-office futility? Hint: No.
Sure, the film has collected a cumulative $323 since its sensational $11 opening in August (NB: We’re still looking for that one paying viewer!), mostly through one-offs or limited engagements everywhere from the Oriental Theater in Berggoetz’s home base of Denver to the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Va. But when the latter venue hosted WME! once more over the weekend, Berggoetz and Co. reported a total haul of $12.
It’s not as bad as it sounds, thought it’s still pretty bad: Tickets were only $2, per WME!’s Facebook page, so that means another six people can count themselves among the elite class who’ve paid to see The Worst Movie EVER! Six people! Were you among them? Please, please share your experience below.
And for the Denver-based readers who might care to be among that class going forward, the film will be back at the Oriental on Nov. 17. $400 cume, here we come!

It’s been a while since we checked in with the team behind The Worst Movie EVER! — which is to say with Glenn Berggoetz, the actor/filmmaker/no-budget impresario whose gonzo epic set a record for box-office futility with an $11 opening. Things have been mostly looking up since then: There was a relatively well-received screening down in Virginia, and, according to Berggoetz, exhibition interest everywhere from a domestic TV syndicate to Brazil, Japan and beyond. But! There have been bumps along the road as well — ugly, anonymous, death-threatening bumps.
I caught up with Berggoetz on Monday, inquiring about a voicemail apparently left by a man claiming that WME! moved him to debilitating, homicidal rage. “I want to physically kill you,” he says shortly before flying off the handle about the “repulsive piece of filth” for which “I hope you die!” The caller, whose name and number were blocked, left the message on Sept. 23 — likely after seeing it on TV, Berggoetz said, adding he made a deal placing WME! on a few stations in a test run for wider syndication. “That’s the only place it’s been shown in the last couple weeks,” Berggoetz told me via e-mail. (Of course, there’s always the option of watching it online for $5, which, let’s face it, heightens the stakes dramatically.)
He forwarded the message to Movieline HQ, and we bring it you here (toggle CC on for captions; it’s only NSFW insofar as it features a guy ranting about murder and…

Today in Worst Movie EVER! news: The infamous $11 mockbuster has a new Web site where you can download the movie for the low, low price of $5. Yes, $5. We might double this thing’s gross by lunchtime! But wait, there’s more!
Filmmaker Glenn Berggoetz is pledging a “reward paid in nickels” for any evidence leading to the identification of Viewer Zero, i.e. the lone man or woman who paid admission to see WME! in its brief midnight engagement at the Laemmle Sunset 5. It’s increasingly harder for me to believe that this person has not yet come forward or been positively ID’d, but hey. If a reward in nickels won’t draw someone out of hiding, nothing will.
Berggoetz also now offers the film’s soundtrack (“Composed and performed by Norwegian Soft Kitten. It’s completely free! It’s not very good!”) and promises a dubbed version of WME! for the film’s burgeoning Italian following (I can’t make it up, seriously). Other international distribution arrangements are reportedly forthcoming, as are future screenings in the U.S. — starting this Wednesday at the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Va. Or, again, you can just cut out the middle man and revel in the box-office bottom-scraping for a mere fiver. Just putting it out there.
