Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead reboot, which begins filming in New Zealand this spring, has found a new star to fill the shoes of original Ash Bruce Campbell, so to speak: 22-year-old British-born actress Lily Collins, who’ll next be seen playing Snow White to Julia Roberts’ evil queen in Tarsem’s fairytale adaptation Mirror Mirror. According to Bloody Disgusting, Collins — last glimpsed, rather unfortunately, looking lovely on the lam with Taylor Lautner in Abduction — will lead a cast of five pretty young things who hole up in a cabin in the woods with a Book of the Dead. BD reports that Collins’ character Mia is a rebooted version of Ash; after a recent struggle with drugs, she and her pals head to the woods so she can detox but, of course, demonic possessions muck up the retreat.
On board to direct is Fede Alvarez, discovered by Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures after his Uruguayan sci-fi short Panic Attack earned him notice, with a screenplay co-written by Rodo Sayagues and Diablo Cody. So while Raimi and Campbell are onboard as producers, this Evil Dead will be created by voices new to the franchise, clearly aimed at a new generation of fans. In which case, are you ready for a new lady Ash — one who’s as fair than them all?
The Evil Dead reboot is set to hit theaters on April 12, 2013.

Full Story »Here’s what I’ve gathered from the new Snow White and the Huntsman trailer: Charlize Theron’s Evil Queen is pissed, Kristen Stewart’s Snow White is innocent, and the color saturation of this fairytale world looks like a Crayola-dappled Middle Earth. Pretty spectacular.
Looks like Theron is taking the cavalier rancor of her Young Adult character and elevating it to mythic proportions. Why can’t Patrick Wilson play Prince Charming while Patton Oswalt plays all the Dwarves? Yes, I’ve thought about this before.

Hollywood is queefing out Snow White movie after Snow White movie and here’s the one that recycled Bjork’s Oscar swan dress (see Phil Collins’ daughter wearing that white tinfoil swan mess on her head in the picture below) and also cast Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. The only two words that jump into my head after blinking at this picture a couple of time are: A MESS!
You know, Julia’s laugh could put any bitch in a coma so she sort of makes sense as the Evil Queen, but then they stapled my auntie’s white peacock wall ornament to her back and slapped some sequined peacock feathers over her nipples. How are we supposed to believe that Julia can shoot fear into grown men when she basically looks like the fail version of this masterpiece look:
Even the Evil Queen’s mirror can’t with the mess she’s wearing. I’m sure there one scene will go something like this:

Entertainment Weekly premiered the first photo of Roberts in character as the Evil Queen as well as a few other new photos of Lily Collins and Armie Hammer. While we love Lily Collins’s Snow White ballgown (no comment on the Bjork-inspired headpiece), Julia Roberts looks more like a poorly-outfitted peasant with a soft spot for peacock feathers than an evil sorceress who plots deaths via poisoned apples. Which Evil Queen do you prefer?
Both Snow White films are due in theaters next year.

While it’s not quite enough to fuel a whole feature, the premise of Tucker & Dale vs Evil is a slice of meta-genre brilliance: What if the creepy, forbidding locals who always glare so unwelcomingly at slasher movie protagonists on their way to their haunted mansions and creepy cabins in the woods were actually just misunderstood? What if they were only trying to make conversation, and it’s the college students/horny teenagers/yuppie vacationers who rush to judge and act hostile and end up dying in the wilderness? In a particularly nice touch, the hillbilly heroes of this horror-comedy (which leans far heavier toward the latter half of that equation) are actually headed to a weekend getaway themselves. Tucker (Alan Tudyk) has saved up enough to buy a “fixer-upper,” a dilapidated cabin that evidence indicates might have once belonged to a psycho killer — but hey, it’s on a lake.
Tucker’s brought his best friend Dale (Tyler Labine) along to check out the place and do a little fishing, but while stopping at the gas station they cross paths with a group of college students on spring break, among them the pretty Allison (_30 Rock_’s Katrina Bowden) and the macho Chad (Jesse Moss). The kids have stopped to stock up on beer, and find Tucker and Dale and the whole location “sooo creepy” (for possibly good reason — what kind of convenience store carries six-pound jars of pickled eggs like the one Dale buys?). Bruce Campbell is full of big announcements this summer. First, he confirmed that a remake of Evil Dead is officially in the works. (With Diablo Cody on board to help write the script no less.) And now, the actor has just tweeted that he will work with his long-time collaborator Sam Raimi once again in Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Just an hour ago, the actor Tweeted that he would definitely be featured in Raimi’s prequel to the 1939 classic: “I. Am. In. Oz. Sam Raimi refuses to tell me what character I will portray. Just know that the role is PIVOTAL.”
Campbell joins James Franco (who will play the title character) as well as Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz, who will play the three witches. Walt Disney Pictures has given the mega-budgeted movie a March 8, 2013 release date.
Cambell has worked with Raimi, whom he met in high school, on a number of projects including the Evil Dead series, the Spider-Man series, Darkman and The Quick and the Dead.

Confirming yesterday’s report that producer Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures is moving forward on an Evil Dead remake, to be helmed by Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez, a press release today also shared the new tidbit that Alvarez’s and Rodo Sayagues’s script is being polished by none other then Juno Oscar-winner Diablo Cody.
Tweeting today after the news hit, Cody passed along this word of encouragement:
“Re: EVIL DEAD. Fede Alvarez wrote a brilliant script. My job is easy. Have no fear. (Wait, do have fear.)”
Cody’s not only a genre nerd, but an avowed fan of the original film, and is set to make her directorial debut with Lamb of God. Her last horror project, Jennifer’s Body, even included an Evil Dead shout-out. So, Ash disciples — does this give you more confidence in a new Evil Dead?

Talk of a fourth Evil Dead movie/Evil Dead remake has been around for a while, with little solid proof that the indie horror franchise would actually see new life. Until now: Following an online report that editor Bob Murawski was heading to Detroit to start working on the project, Bruce Campbell — Ash himself — has Tweeted confirmation that the project is on its way to fruition.
Responding to a skeptical fan, Campbell (whose new Twitter account, @GroovyBruce, was verified by his official website) Tweeted the following:
“Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”
The original Evil Dead debuted 30 years ago, spawned sequels Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, and was adapted into a stage musical. Director Sam Raimi, who’s busy with Oz: The Great and Powerful, will be on board producing; Campbell previously hinted that he may have a role in the film (“I will be one of the producers and possibly play the milk man”).
Meanwhile, Bloody Disgusting reports that Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez has landed in the director’s chair. Back in 2009, Alvarez signed with Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures based on the strength of his low-budget YouTube hit short, Panic Attack!
