Jennifer Lawrence (or “JLaw” as a friend calls her, indicating we really are that lazy as a species) had always impressed me as a sensible girl and a fairly talented actress. She was hot as the redneck meth-family girl getting her ass beat by mountain hags in Winter’s Bone. And she wisely didn’t try to upstage Effie Trinket or Woody Harrleson’s demure yet devastating wig in Hunger Games. But then she went and told Marie Claire South Africa (via Radar) that she’s a big fan of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Dance Moms. That’s unfortunate.
Ms. Lawrence serves up that typical Hollywood starlet interview where she claims to be a stay-at-home mom and not one of those Lohan types who’s always doing the reverse cowgirl on a bottle of Svedka. She loves to be home on a her couch, watching horrific TV guaranteed to drive any thinking person to put a gun in their mouth. Basically she likes all the shows I do except for Kunty Kim & Fam. Even this guttersnipe can find a standard or two in her overnight bag.

Full Story »Coming off like a mashup of Shaun of the Dead and Zombie Land with some manic pixie dream girl nonsense thrown in, the premise of Warm Bodies – after a worldwide apocalypse, zombie boy falls in love with human girl – is interesting, and the book upon which it’s based has been really well received.
But in the hands of the wrong studio things could go horribly wrong. Like The Time Traveller’s Wife horribly wrong. Add to this the fact that we’re dangerously close to reaching peak zombie and you feel less like we’re about to get something cool and more like we’re about to see the last drops of fuel extracted from a dried out earth, Mad Max style, before the zombie genre is killed forever.
Consider my fears (temporarily) averted. Via Fandango, the first four minutes of Warm Bodies has popped up online, and shocker, it manages to be funny and kind of touching, and reveals a really interesting take on the whole undead-as-a-metaphor-for-something thing. Previous zombie films have used the shuffling undead as a stand-in for things like consumerism and global pandemics like AIDS. Warm bodies treats it note for note like depression. Have a look and see for yourself.
Rob Corddry as a middle aged zombie who clearly used to be a heavy drinking business traveller is also a nice touch. Yeah, it does mine rather overexploited territory, glossing over the origins of the apocalypse via heavy references to other well known zombie films, but that’s fine because it looks like we might be getting our first original take on zombies in several years. Just so long as none of them run.

Much like the newspaper boy from Better Off Dead, Demi wants her $2.00. FOUR WEEKS, TWENTY PAPERS, THAT’S TWO DOLLARS, PLUS TIP. Even though her ass is by far richer and more plasticized than Ashton Kutcher, the hold up in Dummy Demi Moore filing for divorce according to TMZ is her need for some of Ashton’s cash. Okay, in our Ramen Noodle, store brand bread and Pabst Blue Ribbon worlds, Ashton is fabulously wealthy (yes, I just typed Ashton and fabulous in the same sentence, and yes, you should slap the shit out of me for that) but when you look at Demi’s net worth, you see that #getmoneybitch doesn’t really apply here. It’s like Donald Trump rolling the valet for his $75 in tips for the day. Bitter much?
Sources say that they can’t agree on the settlement, and she wants a fat one (don’t we all?) like the one she got when she divorced Bruce Willis. Full Story »With this season’s Les Misérables mania in swing, many a moviegoer has been obsessing over those familiar songs and weepy French revolutionary dramatics in anticipation of the Christmas Oscar pic. I’ve been thinking a lot about the classic Les Mis tune “On My Own,” about one girl’s unrequited love for a boy who loves another — but not as sung by Eponine about Marius and his beloved little songbird Cosette. I’m talking Joey Potter’s Miss Windjammer rendition from season one of Dawson’s Creek.
If you were a teenage girl growing up in the late ’90s, chances are you watched the seminal WB series. And if you had any sense at all, you identified not with wannabe Spielberg Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), adorably feckless Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), or the hot-but-troubled new girl in town Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams), but with the tomboyish girl-next-door, Joey Potter (Katie Holmes).
So when Joey reluctantly entered the local Miss Windjammer beauty contest (for college tuition money!) and warbled the Les Miserables ballad “On My Own” — prompting stupid Dawson to see past Jen and notice Joey for the first time ever — you LOVED EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF IT. Joey was the Eponine of Capeside, Massachusetts, and Dawson was her Marius, and this Eponine was finally getting her man.
I’ll admit with no small shred of embarrassment: I’ve probably seen Joey sing “On My Own” dozens of times in my life. As soon the Internet invented YouTube, I found it and watched it again. Full Story »There aren’t many more clues to be had about Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained in this exclusive Yahoo! Movies trailer, or in the director’s latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter. But he does share a nifty story about a young fan who wrote herself into a third chapter of Kill Bill.
Tarantino took part in a THR roundtable that also featured Ben Affleck (Argo) Gus Van Sant (Promised Land), David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) and Ang Lee (Life of Pi) . how the final cut of his hotly anticipated slavery-era story is different from the movie he originally envisioned, Tarantino replied, “It’s shorter.” But he does recount an interesting anecdote involving a fan. The director says that a “14-year-old girl wrote a little synopsis for Kill Bill Vol. 3,” explaining: “She wanted to play the daughter grown up, or at least at her age.”
Tarantino says he read the synopsis and called the fan to thank her. “I thought it was just so sweet that this little girl liked the movie so much that she continued the story herself,” he said. “I always really hope that people take the story on themselves and take it to a different place and fill in the blanks that I didn’t tell them about.”
Based on this Django Unchained trailer, I say — I say — I foresee some of Tarantino’s more computer-savvy fans remaking this trailer with Foghorn Leghorn playing plantation owner Calvin Candie instead of Leonardo DiCaprio. Check it out below.
