Golden Globe nominees Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor turned out for a special screening of their epic tearjerker The Impossible and talked to me about how they summoned the emotional wherewithal to play a couple whose family is torn apart by a tsunami.
The picture’s director, J.A.Bayona also attended and told me he had no qualms about casting a Scottish and an Australian actor to play the real-life Spanish couple on which the harrowing story is based. Bayona pointed out that the film never clarifies the couple’s nationality. Besides, the actual husband and wife who inspired the story were on the carpet and they were clearly supportive of the film.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are not only co-hosts of the 70th Golden Globes this year, they’re also competitors. Both were nominated for Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy, with Fey duking it out with her counterpart for 30 Rock, while Poehler is up for the award for Park and Recreation.

But while the co-hosts won’t conceivably know the results until the envelope opens at the ceremony on January 13th, the pair are busy working together in the lead-up to the big event, and no doubt re-calling those good ol’ Saturday Night Live days.
In this promo for the Globes, the duo are dressed in matching golden sparkly dresses and they both dish out cheesy Brit(ish) accents (until they don’t). Maybe they’re commenting on the resurgence of British-speak in Hollywood films reminiscent of the very early “golden days” of Hollywood? Who knows, but here’s a funny look at what may bode well for the Globes telecast after the New Year.

If there is any disappointment or bitterness that The Master was set to receive the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival today, only for the top prize there to be “re-assigned” due to a rule limiting the number of awards one title can receive, then director Paul Thomas Anderson did not show it this afternoon at the Toronto International Film Festival where the film is having its North American premiere. Anderson along with actress Amy Adams and producer JoAnne Sellar spoke with reporters at the festival along with TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey.
“It was amazing what happened in Venice. Philip [Seymour Hoffman] was able to go over there because Joaquin [Phoenix] and I have duties over here at this festival,” said Anderson. “And, it was amazing what they gave us. The best part was that they gave [awards] to both of the boys.”
Anderson acknowledged that he was aware of the apparent controversy, but said he was satisfied with the prizes The Master received at the Italian festival.
“I’m thrilled with whatever they want to hand over. I heard some of the scuttlebutt recently but I’m just thrilled with what they hand over. And that’s all.”
Along with the Best Actor prize being split by Hoffman and Phoenix, Paul Thomas Anderson was awarded Venice’s Silver Lion for Best Director, while Korean director Kim-Ki Duk’s Pieta received the festival’s Golden Lion.
Asked if he was disappointed he couldn’t be in Venice to pick up the awards personally, Anderson joked, “Through our studies on this film we’ve gotten to where we can do time travel. I’m actually at two places at once. I’m at the Pizza Hut and the Taco Bell.”

Aside from a few honors of the Teen Choice and MTV Movie variety, newly minted Screen Actors Guild Award and Golden Globe nominee Jonah Hill is an awards virgin — which makes this year’s lead-up to the Oscars particularly exciting for the actor, who earlier this year impressed critics with his role in Moneyball as Brad Pitt’s Ivy League-educated, number-crunching Oakland A’s wingman. The role, like his 2010 titular turn in Cyrus, was a welcome departure from the wise-cracking characters audiences have grown accustomed to seeing him play, from the early days of Knocked Up and Superbad to last weekend’s The Sitter. Next up, Hill uses his sarcastic charm to crack down on a high school drug ring in the March 16 feature adaptation of 21 Jump Street, which Hill also wrote and produced.
On the eve of his first SAG Award nomination, Hill phoned Movieline to discuss the anxieties of award season, how he plans to maintain the momentum of his dramatic evolution and and his favorite film scene of all time.
Hi Jonah! How does it feel to be experiencing your first award season?
It’s very bizarre. It’s very exciting. I never would have thought that I’d be up for an award or anything like that but then you do all of these interviews and [the reporters] make you think that might. You start thinking, ‘Maybe I will get [nominated] for something.’ And then if I don’t, I’m going to feel like I failed everyone.
When you signed on to Moneyball, did you have any inkling that this role might be an opportunity for serious award buzz?
No, I just thought this was going to be a great movie.…
