Happy New Year!
Well, we actually made it through 2012 without being shot into space where Tommy Girl and John Travolta would cackle at us while zipping off to Xenu’s home planet in their space pods (which look like this). We made it! Although, Kim Kardashian is knocked up with the Illuminati’s golden child, so I’m sure the rapture will swallow all of us in 6 months when she gives birth to a swarm of locusts and four fishsticks-eating horsemen. But in the meantime, let’s all toast to the beautiful things that 2012 gave us like Mama June’s stack of Pringles chins and her Forklift Foot. 2013 is totally going to be a breakout year for Mama June’s Forklift Foot!
And I’m going to spend my New Year’s Eve rounding up all the roosters on the island (Seriously, Kauai is the island of roosters and not a second goes by when one isn’t cock-a-doodle-doodling up my asshole. That sounded sexy, but it isn’t.) and slapping Honey Boo Boo glasses over their eyes before getting them drunk on bottom shelf rum, so they’ll be too hungover tomorrow to wake my ass up at 4:30 in the morning with their yodeling. That’s what my ass is going to do.
Happy New Year, everyone!

Top 10s abound, but what the hell, its New Year’s Eve and there are mere hours left (in the Western Hemisphere at least) to look back on the year while it’s still here – Happy New Year Australia, N.Z., Japan and much of Asia.

For those trolling the internet Monday and stumble on this list, I hope it’ll spawn more Top 10s. Either in your own mind or better yet – in the comments below. Or even just give your Top 5 or hell… Just your one favorite. Or even your least favorite. Just go for it, don’t be shy.
Below is my ten favorites for 2012. I admit, mine may be loaded with some of the “cold and corny prestige pics and all those ‘respectable’ ‘films’ headed for Oscar gold” as my fab colleague Jen Yamato describes – but there it is…
My favorite, Amour, was also the toughest to watch, but it just stayed with me through the rest of the year after having the privilege to see it for the first time in Cannes last May. I saw it again in December and it stayed with me as my favorite even if I was rather numb walking out of the theater. It is one helluva tough one, but so good. Disagree? Go for it and say why in the comments.
My top 10 follows with an ever so brief comment and a trailer (admittedly, there are still a couple of ‘key’ movies I still need to see). And what were your faves of 2012?
1. Amour – The toughest movie I,…

Martin Scorsese turned 70 on Nov. 17, which makes it an ideal time to look at some of the best cinematic gifts he’s given to the world. This list could go on well past the eight clips I’ve chosen. For instance, Joe Pesci’s chilling “Do I amuse you in some way?” scene in GoodFellas could easily be included, but I wanted to feature one clip for each of Scorsese’s seven decades (and, in birthday tradition, one to grow on) without repeating any films.
1. Robert De Niro’s “You talkin’ to me?” scene in Taxi Driver (1976) — One of the most quoted, imitated and parodied scenes in the last 50 years of filmmaking. And look how young Bobby D looks.
2. The Copacabana Steady-cam shot from GoodFellas (1990) — This shot makes me practically giddy every time I watch it. It’s a beautiful, seamless depiction of how power and influence can be bought and sold on the streets of New York City.
