Hugh Jackman is way more emo than I thought.
But I’ll get to that in a moment. Among the filmmakers who turned up to praise the Les Misérables star at the Museum of the Moving Image’s salute to Jackman in lower Manhattan on Tuesday night was The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan who grew an enormous Cheshire-Cat grin when I asked him if the Superman reboot he is producing, Man of Steel, would see a cameo by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, or any actor, as Batman, and if he had any objections to a cameo as a continuity move to tie the Supes movie to the 2015 Justice League movie.
“I can’t talk about that. You know that,” Nolan said cheerily. I didn’t know that, actually, but now that I do, I feel compelled to point out that, despite the frustratingly inconclusive nature of his answer, it’s not a ‘No.’ Yes, JG-L’s camp shot down the speculation as “entirely false” back in November, but if the idea had been ruled out, wouldn’t Nolan be saying something along those lines, too, so that the fan boys could move on? You know how angry they can get when their casting hopes and dreams are suddenly deflated after being allowed to build for months.
The impish smile on Nolan’s face as he issued that no comment also heightened my optimism, especially in the wake of the powerful Man of Steel trailer that’s now burning up the Internet. Zack Snyder’s take on Superman clearly aspires to have the kind of psychological heft and dark undertones that made The Dark Knight trilogy so satisfying. Full Story »Total Film has the first look at Idris Elba in Guillermo del Toro’s alien invasion flick Pacific Rim, for which he built — and destroyed — replica sets, kaiju style. Elba stars alongside Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi in the mecha-epic, which pits robot-piloting humans in battle against interplanetary monsters.
In the magazine’s latest issue, Del Toro spills about the process of destroying entire city blocks and rigging robot hydraulic rigs on the set:
When we’re talking about the physicality of the fight, we ended up building several blocks of Hong Kong. And literally demolished them. We built a building and then we took down the buildings.
We built command centres of the robots that were the size of the house. We started them on hydraulic rigs that shoot and elevated them and moved them round so you could really get a sense of the physical nature driving a robot like this.
“The thing I love most in the world is monsters, and we are creating great monsters,” del Toro told Movieline last year, when he was just starting on the film. Pacific Rim is set for release on July 13, 2013.

Yep, it’s happening. A week and change after finding their Dick Burton among True Blood’s werewolf population, Lindsay Lohan and the makers of Lifetime’s Liz & Dick have released the first production image from the romance-biopic. And, well… it’s kind of shockingly classy. If you squint, LiLo and Grant Bowler actually kinda sorta look like the iconic couple. Anyone else pleasantly surprised?
According to E!, who’s documenting La Lohan’s would-be comeback with the same aplomb as it did her shaky past few years, the still was shot last week while filming officially began today. Over to producer Larry Thompson for the oversharing update:
Thompson tells E! News that the first scenes were shot this morning starting around 9:30 AM and they were of Liz and Dick on a yacht (docked at Marina del Rey). He also reveals that the cast was in good spirits:
“A little first-day jitters for everyone, but it went well,” he revealed, while adding that Lindsay was in a good mood as well.
I’m still getting over how much Lohan resembles Taylor, even at an angle and in profile and doused in heavy eye make-up. Then again, this is the very first day of filming, people. A little early to call this one — the biopic is set to air on November 3 — but ever so promising…

The latest publicity shot to come from the Skyfall set is several steps up from the Banal 007 meme witnessed a while back, though it’s still pretty banal: Daniel Craig, with his back to the lens, sits on the ledge of a pool. At night. Ripped. Part movie photo, part gay-resort brochure.
Alas! It’s just James Bond chillin’ at the London Four Seasons. Meanwhile, according to the synopsis accompanying the fist-look photo in Empire, “With Craig and director Sam Mendes promising something on an even bigger and more emotional canvas than ever before, expect great things from Bond 23…” Will do.
