We were all a little sad, I think, when it was confirmed that they’d broken up. No one sadder than him. But she left him because of his drinking. It was excessive, and with the experience of her last relationship, she saw the signs and opted for self-preservation. In addition to his relationship with alcohol though, he also had an unconventional relationship with sex. Think…Michael Fassbender in Shame. Along those lines. Though he was faithful to her, totally, there are addiction issues he clearly has to address. And he’s doing that now, going to meetings, reaching out to another celebrity in recovery with whom he’s worked, as some of their issues are quite similar. Full Story »British actress Emily Blunt has traveled both the studio and indie route during her career, most recently appearing in Lasse Hallström’s specialty feature Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and starring this week opposite Jason Segel in Universal’s romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement. Meanwhile, another project Blunt is promoting in New York, writer-director Lynn Shelton’s Your Sister’s Sister, joined Engagement as part of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, still underway in Manhattan. The smaller of her two Tribeca titles, Sister proved something of career déjà vu for Blunt, who told an Apple Store audience that her experience working on the feature reminded her of her very first film feature role.
“The whole time I was shooting my first film My Summer of Love [2004], I was terrified because it was all improvised,” Blunt said at the event, co-hosted this past weekend by Indiewire. “I hadn’t worked that way in years, so I was [eager] to do it again. It’s daunting, but I was excited.”
Your Sister’s Sisterco-stars Blunt as Iris, who sends her good friend Jack (Mark Duplass) to her family’s island following the death of his brother. After he arrives at the island getaway, he has a surprising encounter with Iris’s sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), which unleashes a revealing stretch of antics over the course of several days. While the film is intended to be dramatic, comedic elements surface even in surprising ways for the actors. “I almost felt sorry for my character because when I was playing her, I was thinking very seriously,” said DeWitt, commenting on audience laughter during some scenes with her character. “But I think that when people laugh, they’re seeing themselves in the character,” Blunt added.

They’ll soon go from Mr. and Mrs. Smith to Mr. and Mrs. Pitt — that’s right, celebrity supercouple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are finally making it official. A rep for the pair confirmed their news today to THR, calling it “a promise for the future.” Really, isn’t the long-awaited Brangelina engagement a promise for us all?
Hmm… could this be why Jolie made such concerted efforts to hide her ring finger on the red carpet last month in New York? Observe:

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn might have held onto the #1 slot during the Thanksgiving frame, but holiday buzz lifted those plucky Muppets to a strong second place showing; with $24.7 million over three days, Jason Segel, Kermit, and Co. should ride the Rainbow Connection all the way to a very nice pile of green by weekend’s end. Meanwhile, Happy Feet Two continues to slide and Aardman Animation’s fellow wintry offering Arthur Christmas opened with a modest $4.5 million Friday. Martin Scorsese’s 3-D fall family flick Hugo, on the other hand, enjoyed a strong debut on a fraction of the screens. Maybe audiences weren’t quite ready to ring in the yuletide cheer?

Can something be considered fan fiction if it’s also an official, canonical studio product? I’m going to argue yes, absolutely, because with The Muppets, Jason Segel has crafted what can only be described as the most extravagant work of fan fiction ever, Mary Sue-ing himself into the Muppet universe as a character who helps reunite the gang in order to save their old theater and the day. Segel, who co-wrote the film with Nicholas Stoller, even leaves his own tentative mark on Jim Henson’s beloved ensemble by inserting a personal addition in the form of alter ego Walter (voiced by Peter Linz), his character’s Muppet brother and the group’s most devoted fan even when the rest of the world seems to have forgotten about them. Fandom can be a precarious thing — someone’s devotion to the source material he or she is adapting to screen can sometimes lead to being too cautious with it, too respectful to do what’s best for the movie instead of only for the hardcore supporters. But the love Segel has for the Muppets is a genuine, perceivable and positive quality that suffuses this good-hearted revitalization of the franchise, and if some wish fulfillment sneaks in there too, it seldom gets in the way of the enjoyment to be had.
Segel plays Gary and Amy Adams is Mary, his equally cheerful schoolteacher girlfriend who’s been waiting with saintly patience for a decade for her oblivious love to propose. They live in an idyllic small town called, appropriately, Smalltown, and Gary still shares a house…
