The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Iron Man 3 are among the most anticipated blockbusters of 2013. That is the result of survey of over 2,000 film fans by online movie ticketing site Fandango, which asked users their picks for the new year.
The survey also ventures into who potential audiences are eyeing as potential breakouts over the year. Leading the pack among Best Male Breakout Movie Star is Henry Cavill, the Immortals star who will play Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming Zack Snyder pic Man of Steel. Men in Black 3 actress Alice Eve tops the ‘Biggest Female Breakout Movie Star.’ The Men in Black 3 actress will play Dr. Carol Marcus in the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, which is also one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the new year.
Sir Ben Kingsley tops the “Most Anticipated Villain” category for Iron Man 3 (also an anticipated blockbuster), while World War Z tops out “Most Anticipated Apocalyptic Movie.” The action-drama stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos and David Morse follows a U.N. employee who travels around the world in a race against time to stop the outbreak of a deadly Zombie pandemic.
After being Sexiest Man Alive in 2012, Channing Tatum is apparently maintaining momentum into 2013, coming in as the top “Sexiest Man in the Movies” for his roles in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and White House Down. Mila Kunis leads the pack in the female category for Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Two-thousand fans were polled by Fandango last week.

Colin Farrell is back in another sure-to-be-very-good film that will probably not do so well at the box office, the upcoming revenge thriller Dead Man Down, directed by Niels Arden Oplev.
Farrell plays a mob hitman blackmailed by a disfigured young woman (Noomi Rapace) interested in procuring his services to exact revenge on the man who cut up her face. That man happens to be a crime lord played by Terrence Howard, and naturally we can expect a lot of seething menace and angry looks between him and Farrell before things come to a head.
The first trailer for Dead Man Down has been released. Here’s a look:
This is Oplev’s first film since directing the 2009 original version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. That film was objectively awesom, and history will remember it as vastly superior to Fincher’s 2011 remake. Given Oplev’s record, the excellent cast, and the fact that it looks like we’re getting the In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths Collin Farrell instead of the Total Recall Colin Farrell, I have a hard time imagining that this will suck. Unfortunately, while the trailer is sufficiently moody and violent, it makes Dead Man Down feel like a billion other hitman-finds-redemption movies.
Still, the cover of Shine On You Crazy Diamond is kind of amazing, even if it doesn’t displace The Scissor Sisters from the list of greatest of all Pink Floyd covers.
Dead Man Down comes out March 8.

By now you know that the list of songs eligible to be nominated for Best Original Song at the 85th Academy Awards is kind of mind-blowing. Not so mind-blowing is the generally risk-averse bent of the average Academy voter, which is why we should probably just send congratulations now to Brave, Les Miserables, and Adele, resting easy one of them will actually be the right recipient.
But maybe not! Yeah, we all agree that Skyfall is the best thing to happen to our ears since the invention of the lobe massage, but does the winner have to be that obvious? Every now and then something crazy slips through the filter, like Elliot Smith in 1998, or Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova ten years later. Really, there’s so much about the list that is pure, wonderful bonkersness and they would all shake things up more than accidentally slurring a huge chunk of your audience and getting fired from Oscars-production duties. If we had our way, one of these cuts below would send its songwriter home with a clunky golden statue.
* “Casa De Mi Padre” from Casa De Mi Padre!
Dios mio! The title track from the criminally underrated Will Ferrell comedy accurately nails tone of 1970s theme songs, a perfect fit for the film’s lightly mocking telenovella/grindhouse vibe. The only problem is that the other two songs from Casa that made this list, ‘Del Cielo’ and ‘Yo No Se’, are just as good. Let’s just make a mashup and get them all through.
* “100 Black Coffins” from Django Unchained
We don’t know why Rick Ross wants a honey baked muffin so much, or what that has to do with the title of this song (Kidding! Now try…

This just in from the Academy: This year’s Oscars could see the best Best Song race in history. See which original songs are in contention, including unconventional tracks from Django Unchained, Magic Mike, The Man With The Iron Fists, and Casa de mi Padre.
The list is a who’s who of obvious, from “Touch the Sky” from Brave, to “Skyfall” from Skyfall, but lost in the crush of guaranteed nominees is shocking reveal that some secret hipsters have managed to break into the academy. Mariachi? McConaughey? Multiple hip hop tracks? What the hell will the old, stodgy voters who gave Enchanted like 18 of the available 5 slots in 2008 make of their options?

This Japanese Iron Man 3 trailer has surfaced, and though it doesn’t offer much in the way of new footage, you do get an added glimpse of Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) getting blown back by the blast of the helicopter attack on Tony Stark’s U.S.S. Enterprise-like home.
Although Movies.com points out that that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently went on record saying Iron Man 3 isn’t so much a “serious” film as a serious exploration of Tony Stark’s character, I still think that based upon this new image and the shot of a tortured-looking Pepper in the last trailer, the arc of Paltrow’s character is going to be crucial to the plot.
There’s also that moment in the last trailer where Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) says: “I hope I can protect the one thing I can’t live without.” Even though his use of the word “thing” is unfortunate, you know that’s a speech about Pepper.
Oh, and one last non-Pepper point: Unless Marvel is trying to make Ben Kingsley’s indeterminately international Mandarin character intentionally cheesy, it needs to lose that “Heroes–there is no such thing” line from future promotional clips. That’s dialogue more befitting of Austin Powers than Iron Man.
