Who Wore It Better?
I declared to myself that Julianne Moore could do no wrong when I watched her tearfully cry out, “I sucked other men’s cocks,” in Magnolia, but she has done wrong for the first time in the history of forever.
At the Bvlgari Celebration of Elizabeth Taylor’s Jewelry Collection in Beverly Hills last night, the ginger goddess wore a $6 million diamond and emerald necklace that Richard Burton gave to La Liz during the shooting of Cleopatra in Rome. Some source tells People that when Julianne walked into the room, everybody including Drew Barrymore, Kiki Dunst, Naomi Watts and Marisa Tomei stopped to stare at the necklace. Yeah, the entire room pressed pause, because they couldn’t believe that Julianne wore that necklace with daytime hair, a red dress and beige heels. Who wears that necklace with beige heels?!
Who ever styled Julianne did her ass wrong in the worst way possible. The only way to wear that necklace is to wear it with a headdress made of hypodermic needles, e-cigarettes and an FTD bouquet.
That necklace just doesn’t shine on Julianne Moore the same way it shined on Elizabeth Taylor. But maybe that’s because Lindsay Lohan snatched the real one and replaced it with a replica made of beer bottle glass and Barbie earrings. That’s probably the real case.

For Mark and Jay Duplass, the sibling team behind The Puffy Chair, Baghead, and last year’s Cyrus, success came only after years of frustration — and only by happy accident. “All we were doing in the late ’90s, in our twenties, was trying to be the Coen brothers,” Jay Duplass laughed to Movieline, “and failing at that, because the Coen brothers are awesome and they’re already the Coen brothers.” It was only when the brothers Duplass stopped trying so hard, at the end of their creative rope and after years of fruitless attempts, that they found the formula for personal filmmaking that would become their signature.
After releasing their 2008 indie horror Baghead, the Duplasses ventured into studio territory with 2010’s Cyrus, their first mainstream venture with studio backing (courtesy of Fox Searchlight) and name actors (Jonah Hill, John C. Reilly, and Marisa Tomei); next March, Paramount Vantage will release the slacker comedy Jeff Who Lives at Home, starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms. But, as Duplass explained via phone from the Savannah Film Festival, where he and his brother received the Cinevation Award for “imagination, inspiration and innovation in cinema,” they haven’t deviated from the indie spirit with which they work — they just select their projects, and their collaborators, more carefully.
Read on for more with Jay Duplass on accidentally discovering his method (after years of post-film school frustration), why famous actors want to work with him and brother Mark, the security in having Sundance as a fall back plan, the Austin-area slacker savants who inspired Jeff Who Lives at Home, and the current status of the next Duplass release, the…

Also in this Tuesday edition of The Broadsheet: The Ides of March will debut in August… Guillermo del Toro is intrigued by Maleficent… Sylvester Stallone casts his daughter… and more ahead.
· The official cause of the car accident that killed Ryan Dunn and one other passenger has yet to be determined by Pennsylvania police — though one report suggests Dunn’s Porsche was travelling in excess of 100 MPH before the crash — but with rumors and photographic evidence of alcohol possibly being involved, Roger Ebert made his feelings known on Twitter. “Friends don’t let jackasses drive drunk,” he wrote shortly after the news broke. That caused quite a stir among Jackass fans, as well as Dunn’s friend, Bam Margera. “I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of shit roger ebert [sic] has the gall to put in his 2 cents [a]bout a jackass drunk driving and his is one, fuck you!” he wrote over the course of two tweets late Monday night. “Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat fucking mouth!” Ebert has yet to return comment to Margera. [Huffington Post]
· In happier news: George Clooney’s latest directorial outing, The Ides of March, will open the Venice Film Festival at the end of August. Based on the play Farragut North by Beau Willimon, March stars Clooney as a presidential candidate, Ryan Gosling as his idealistic head of media, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as his campaign manager. Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood are along for the ride as well. Fingers crossed this…

Movie stars might be an endangered species, but don’t tell that to the Warner Bros. marketing team behind the new poster for Crazy Stupid Love. All six of the film’s big stars — that would be Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon — get prominent treatment on the one-sheet, which also manages to recall one of the most iconic big screen moments ever.

A nation — and Steve Carell’s bewildered face — turns its lonely eyes to you, Ms. Tomei. Crazy Stupid Love opens in theaters on July 29.
