The Guilt Trip is a film as familiar as a mother’s voice, in more ways than one. Playing a frustrated son and his overbearing mother, Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand elevate a formulaic script with their easygoing chemistry in this road-trip mom com. They produce as many laughs as they do cringes, but the film’s feel-good message is undermined by its ultimate purpose: As a vindication of the rights of Jewish mothers to annoy their children as much as they please.
Rogen plays Andy, a schlubby organic chemist who’s having trouble selling his invention, a nontoxic cleaning spray. The product, clumsily named Scieoclean, is a would-be bestseller, but Andy makes a worse salesman than Tiger Woods shilling monogamy. With the last of his savings he plans a last-ditch effort to drive across the country pitching Scieoclean to several big box stores.
Andy spends the day before his Jersey-to-Vegas trip with his well meaning but tirelessly chatty mother. Joyce (Streisand) is the kind of older widow who’s found a routine that’s nice and busy enough for her post-retirement years, but one that doesn’t include the emotional risks of dating. Over dinner, Joyce confesses to Andy that the love of her life was the boyfriend she had before meeting his father. A quick Google search shows that this long-lost beau also happens to be an advertising exec in San Francisco, a discovery that leads Andy to suggest Joyce join him on the eight-day trip. Of course, he casually leaves out the detail that their final destination has been moved to California, and that he hopes her ex-boyfriend will help him market his floundering product.

Carrie Fisher, aka Princess Leia, came out from under the heavens giving her hilariously light-hearted thoughts on the future of Star Wars and whatever came of Leia and Han Solo. Episode VII writer-apparent, Michael Arndt may want to take a peek at what Her Celestial Highness has to say about the character she first brought to the Galaxies way back in the late ’70s and a tidbit or two on where to go from here.
One thing for sure, given the recent sale of Lucasfilm to that big time studio that asks its fans to Wish Upon a Star, Fisher knows her place.
“I’m now a Disney Princess,” she said on CBS’ The Talk to laughter from the show’s hosts and the live audience Wednesday. “She’s never been gone. She’s been with me forever.”
Arndt may have other ideas, but Fisher apparently sees Leia as married to you-know-who, but she would not be a domestic sort of spouse.
“I like the idea of being Mrs. Solo and we just fought and fought and I killed him,” she joked.
And perhaps alluding to a raging controversy today right here back on earth, Fisher offered up: “I probably even had an affair with some General.”
Fisher and Luke Skywalker co-star Mark Hamill first learned of creator George Lucas’ intent to continue the Star Wars saga last summer after the celluloid siblings had lunch with him. Said Hamill: “…When he said, ‘We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,’ I was just gobsmacked. ‘What? Are you nuts?!’ [laughs] I can see both sides of it. Sahara Davenport (born name: Antoine Ashley) of RuPaul’s Drag Race flew up to heaven on the wings of his wig on Monday and his mother wrote on his Facebook page that he passed away from heart failure at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Sahara’s mother says he was 27 years old. Sahara’s partner in glitter and everything else, Manila Luzon from RuPaul’s Drag Race season 3, also released a statement on his Facebook page:
“Antoine lived to entertain the world as Sahara Davenport, and the world was in awe over his extreme talent. But his heart is what made us all fall in love with him. To me he will always be my best friend, my hero, my Diva, and I have always considered myself more than lucky to have him be forever a part of my life. Thank you, hon, for bringing so much beauty to all of us. Your legacy lives on in me and all of us you’ve touched.”
Sahara’s Facebook page has information about a public memorial and where to send donation to his mother for funeral services.
I hope that Sahara wore that ensemble in the picture above for her trip to heaven, because Jesus, God and all the saints need to see a tuck tool that also creates a double camel toe. They just need to see it up close.
The entire Internet simultaneously shouted SANTO DIOS! this past May when Saved By The Bell’s Lark Voorhies gave an interview with a whole lot of WTF smeared all over her face. It was obvious that something wasn’t right and some speculated that snorting the wrong kind of illegal drug made her do herself up like a LeAnn Rimes impersonator on the white face circuit. But Lark’s mother Tricia tells People (via Yahoo!) that her daughter isn’t hooked on the bad shit. Lark suffers from mental health issues including bipolar disorder. Everything about that last sentence makes me want to gently chin hump a teddy bear while crying myself to sleep.
Tricia says that even though Lark takes medication for her bipolar disorder, she doesn’t want to get psychiatric help and hasn’t exactly embraced finding the right treatment that works for her. Tricia wouldn’t get into any details, but told People that Lark had a mental breakdown due to several traumatic experiences in her life. Lark’s divorce from her husband in 2001 and her career not going anywhere after SBTB didn’t help her mental situation. Nowadays, Lark lives with her mother in Pasadena, barely has any friends and doesn’t really leave the house.

As we all saw on the anti-drug PSA episode of Dr. Phil, White Oprah is not only the epitome of a responsible mother, but she’s also a role model to all young women and she knows this which is why she’d never EVER party with her own daughter. The NYDN went from Long Island bar to Long Island bar and eventually they found White Oprah slumped under a pay phone while yelling at the cord dangling in front of her for calling her a bad mother. They waved half of a Xanax at her face, which made her slur out, “Half a Xanax? That’ll get you one handy with a spit job. Drop ‘em.” When the NYDN told her they wanted to ask her a few questions instead, she agreed! It’s nice to know that wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, White Oprah is probably spitting out the opposite of the truth to some reporter.

Ringing Movieline to discuss her baldly honest, often hilarious memoir — which also reveals darker times, recreational drug use, an abortion, an on-set miscarriage — Marshall explained why she set out to write her life story to begin with: “You want to set the record straight on certain things, because there are so many rumors.”
Among them: Her dramatic backstage relationship with Laverne & Shirley co-star Cindy Williams and her recent lung cancer and brain tumor diagnosis. “The rags still say ‘She’s dying,’” she laughed, emphasizing that her health has improved and she’s ready for the next project. “But I dodged a major bullet.”

Jesse Eisenberg landed an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network and most recently, he is a love-sick architect opposite Alec Baldwin in Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love. Next up, the young star plays a piano prodigy who tries to check his mother (played by Oscar-winner Melissa Leo) into rehab. Things, however, go awry when he is taken hostage by her drug dealer (hate when that happens) and he is suddenly off on a wild adventure.
The film was formerly titled Predisposed when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Despite the obvious that’s revealed in the trailer – namely the aforementioned mother who is hooked on drugs and a kidnapping by a drug dealer, the film appears to have some laughs. Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswanner co-direct the film and wrote the screenplay. IFC Films will release the film August 17th.
Pixar is at its best when it’s making movies about rats working in restaurants and families of superheroes with not-so-super powers; not so much when it’s spinning cautionary environmental tales with robots-in-love subplots and sentimental weepers about grumpy codgers “learning to love again.” Somewhere at the more golden end of that yardstick is Brave, in which a peppery redheaded Scottish princess from days of yore named Merida – her voice is provided by the wonderful Glasgow-born actress Kelly Macdonald – decides she doesn’t want to marry from the selection of gents her parents have chosen for her and would much prefer traipsing through the forest with her trusty bow-and-arrow.

Except Brave doesn’t go where you’re probably expecting it to. (And if you’re sensitive to spoilers, you may not wish to read further.) There isn’t an ultimate prince, a swain of Merida’s choice who steps in to offer her everlasting happiness, while letting her be herself, of course. This is a story about mothers and daughters and the ways they clash over basic, seemingly simple things, only to find their ultimate connection in the very things they can’t change about each other. Even that oversimplifies Brave a little too much, but you get the idea. Brave has a marvelous secret weapon in Emma Thompson, who provides the voice for Merida’s mother, Elinor, a queen with a sense of propriety and a desire to keep her daughter from making bad decisions. But this is a queen who turns into a bear, a big growly girl with a pear-shaped body and a most unladylike manner when it comes to eating fish.
