Top 10s abound, but what the hell, its New Year's Eve and there are mere hours left (in the Western Hemisphere at least) to look back on the year while it's still here - Happy New Year Australia, N.Z., Japan and much of Asia.

[Related: Mash-Ups, 'Moonrise,' And 'Miami' Connections: Jen Yamato's Top 10 Movie Moments of 2012 and Amy Nicholson's / Top 10 of 2012 / Written In Haiku]

For those trolling the internet Monday and stumble on this list, I hope it'll spawn more Top 10s. Either in your own mind or better yet - in the comments below. Or even just give your Top 5 or hell… Just your one favorite. Or even your least favorite. Just go for it, don't be shy.

Below is my ten favorites for 2012. I admit, mine may be loaded with some of the "cold and corny prestige pics and all those 'respectable' 'films' headed for Oscar gold" as my fab colleague Jen Yamato describes - but there it is...

My favorite, Amour, was also the toughest to watch, but it just stayed with me through the rest of the year after having the privilege to see it for the first time in Cannes last May. I saw it again in December and it stayed with me as my favorite even if I was rather numb walking out of the theater. It is one helluva tough one, but so good. Disagree? Go for it and say why in the comments.

My top 10 follows with an ever so brief comment and a trailer (admittedly, there are still a couple of 'key' movies I still need to see). And what were your faves of 2012?

1. Amour - The toughest movie I,…

My top 10 follows with an ever so brief comment and a trailer (admittedly, there are still a couple of 'key' movies I still need to see). And what were your faves of 2012?

1. Amour - The toughest movie I, well, loved.

2. Zero Dark Thirty - I knew what the ending would be, but my palms sweat for hours in the lead-up.

3. Silver Linings Playbook - I thought I'd be bored as I was 'dragged' to see it at a festival. I completely loved it.

4. Lincoln - I like political intrigue - even of the 19th century sort. Tommy Lee Jones was Amazing.

5. Beasts of the Southern Wild - No stars - fantastic acting and a great new voice in filmmaking in the form of Benh Zeitlin.

6. How to Survive a Plague - It's hard to hold back the tears watching as these brave people fight for their lives under the scepter of hate.

7. Anna Karenina - Sumptuous. No surprise the Revolution came along.

8. Holy Motors - This movie may go down as one of 2012's most important.

9. On the Road - Sit down, light up and go for the ride. Garrett Hedlund is a good trip.

10. Argo - Again, you know what the end will be but it still gets the heart racing. The final scenes when the film hits you over the head with how they barely get out is a bit much though.

Earlier this week, Funny or Die tried to answer the question I hoped would never get asked this Oscar season: Who had it worse, slaves or poor, single mothers driven into prostitution?

In a clever four-minute video, Samuel L. Jackson (Team Slaves) and Anne Hathaway (Team PSMDIP) campaigned for their respective sides in a “sad-off.” It’s a brilliant bit of movie promotion, with the actors selling their sad, sad movies (Les Misérables and Django Unchained, respectively) through comedy. “My movie is literally called ‘The Miserable,’” throws down Hathaway.

“Women get beaten in my movie,” boasts Jackson.

“Same thing happens in mine,” Hathaway counters.

“Guy gets his head blown off.”

“Same.”

“There’s a man ripped apart by dogs in my movie.” When Hathaway stays quiet, Jackson cackles in triumph.

The two Oscar nominees eventually get into the yuletide spirit by cheerfully agreeing, “Nothing says Christmas like slaves and whores.” That’s cute and all, but it also smartly points out the paradox of the holiday movie season, that magical time of the year when, between maxing out our credit cards and stuffing our faces like it’s the Mayan apocalypse, we dutifully assign ourselves to watch “serious movies” about “important issues.”

Looking at this group of politically weighty films, Salon film critic Andrew O'Hehir stated last week that he’s looking forward to a “meaty” 2013 Oscars because of the “ideological throwdown” promised by the likely award nominees, especially after the win of last year’s lightweight The Artist.

It’s of course great that so many special-interest groups will have their issues heard throughout Oscar season. But given the fractured, us-versus-them nature of America today, it’s hard not to feel pessimistic that the run-up to the Academy Awards will turn out to be one interminable lose-lose game of Who Suffered Most?

There’s certainly precedent for this. Back in 2005, the Best Picture race rapidly narrowed down to Crash and Brokeback Mountain. In a particularly ugly turn, the media narrative twisted the Oscars into a contest between racism and homophobia, as if declaring racism to be the greater injustice eased the pain felt by bullied gay teens. When Brokeback lost, some commentators exacerbated the situation by blaming the outcome on the homophobia of Academy voters, who are still mostly old, white men. (For the record, they probably just have really bad taste.)

That’s why the best part of Hathaway and Jackson’s video is its preemptive mockery of the tendency to hierarchize different kinds of oppression. In a bit that recalls the 2008 Democratic primary race between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the sad-off briefly veers into black man vs. woman territory. “You try being a black man in the South in the 1800s. I bet you couldn’t handle being a black in the South right now,” taunts Jackson.

“When there’s a French whore in the White House, then we can talk,” Hathaway challenges.

“You say that like there’s never been a French whore in the White House,” says Jackson in the best line of the video.

Let’s hope that’s the last round of sad-off we have to play this holiday season, because justice and equality doesn’t have to be a zero-sum game.

Focus was written by the same writers who wrote Crazy Stupid Love and it's about a con man who falls in love with a con woman and doesn't know if he should choose her or the con. They're looking for another dude to replace him.

Please. Ben Affleck really exited stage left, because he knows that he just doesn't have the trained skills as a thespian to handle the carousel of raw emotions that Kristen Stewart throws at her co-stars during scenes. Stick to your fluff movies like Argo, Ben Affleck!

And every time KStew signs up for a movie, are we going to get a story about how she's going to fuck her married co-star? Do we really need to turn her into some master seductress who can pull a married man's ring off of his finger with her coochie? Sienna Miller, she ain't.

"I was going to be a small part of the next one," he told MTV. "There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct…"

Franco said there was an opening for his character to make a return to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but changes at the Fox studio made it unlikely he'll reprise his role.

"There was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind," said Franco, adding, "but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert's not a part of it so I don't know. My guess is I won't be in it. Nobody's talked to me since Rupert left."

Not that James Franco is in need of things to do. At the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, two of his co-directorial efforts, kink, a documentary about fetish website kink.com and Interior. Leather Bar, described as the "lost 40 minutes from 'Cruising' as a starting point to a broader exploration of sexual and creative freedom," will debut. He is also starring in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's Lovelace at the festival (this will be quite a racy Sundance for Franco apparently). And a quick look at his IMDb page lists about a dozen projects in various stages of completion.

And just to keep things interesting, Franco recently signed with a small Minnesota publisher to debut a collection of his poetry set for April 2014. According to The Guardian poetry editor Jeffrey Shotts described Franco's written work as a "series of portraits of American successes and failures from within Hollywood … But they are also smart and highly aware notes of caution of what can happen when the filmed self becomes fixed and duplicated, while the ongoing self must continue living and watching."

Franco published his first poetry, Strongest of the Litter earlier this fall.

"After the rain, you get so cold, your teeth start to chatter and they say, ‘We’re picking up on a weird sound, what’s that?’ So I’d chatter, ‘It’s my teeth!’”

When Hooper wasn't preoccupied with the butterflies, he devoted plenty of attention to the rain machine, presumably from his eternally dry director’s chair, “The geek in me enjoyed having to come up with the solution of how to do silent rain" so it wouldn't interfere with the live singing, the director explained, adding: "By the end the rain was quiet." Hooper said it took "six months of researching to do rain with with no noise" and after finally achieving "our dream," as he put it, "we had to put the rain sound back in during the sound mixing.”

After their near-freezing stint on the red carpet, all guests stepped inside the warm sanctuary of the Leicester Square Odeon for the movie, after which Hooper invited everybody to drink with him in North London, at Camden’s Roundhouse until late.

James Rolfe is the Angry Video Game Nerd, a man who knows how to define a niche. His eponymous online videos have featured on YouTube, ScrewAttack, GameTrailers, Opie & Anthony and Cinemassacre, and for eight years anyone who ever wanted to watch a man get extremely angry while screaming about old video games knew exactly where to go.

And a lot of people did. The series is the textbook — no, the wiki entry — for online viral success. Initially made as a laugh for a few friends, the early videos became YouTube sensations and spawned over a hundred episodes, millions of hits, multiple DVDs, and now the the impossible dream of most online video makers: a full feature film.

It’s another victory for crowd funding. Rolfe asked his fans for $75,000 and quickly quadrupled that goal, then earned some more. And while the movie isn’t expected until 2013, the trailer is out already.

A video game fan who makes movies making a video game fan movie? If this movie was any more perfect for The Player, I’d be filming it. Here are my initial thoughts:

1. Excellent Twist

Early announcements said the plot would feature Atari's infamous 1982 E.T. release, a game so unpopular that the company is generally believed to have buried millions of the unsold cartridges in the New Mexico desert — not far from Area 51 it turns out — and covered them over in concrete. This made me wince at first because it’s the single most overused “Did you know?” fact recycled by every single gamer who’s just discovered the Internet. But I'm not wincing anymore because that’s the Angry Video Game Nerd’s reaction too! The plot of the movie is that he’s annoyed by all the amateurs repeating the same story over and over again, so he decides to dig into New Mexico himself to prove them wrong

2. High Production Values

Say the phrase “YouTube gamer” and most people will stare blankly at you. But those who understand will imagine heavy breathing, non-existent editing, and the word “Ummm” taking up 50 percent of the audio. But this trailer shows off serious skill with special effects, makeup, multiple characters and camera angles, and a general feeling that this isn’t just some idiot with a camcorder shouting “Let’s make a movie!”

This is no surprise for anyone who’s seen his series. It’s always been elevated above the hordes of wannabe-whiners-with-a-webcam by the immense effort put into production. Rolfe's video-game reviews feature special effects, the best props any retro nerd could ever dream of, costumes, cut scenes, animation, even outdoor trips with a van and a shovel (back when he covered E.T. as an episode.)

3. More Than You’d Expect (In Good and Bad Ways)

The trailer makes it clear that this is more than just a guy shouting about video games — explicitly, extendedly, painfully clear. Rolfe really wants to make a movie, which is great, but the trailer probably shouldn’t have shown us the entire thing. We’ve got an intro, an explanation, a misunderstanding with the military, the interior of Area 51, the existence of aliens and even the triumphant scene where the nerd uses his video gaming skills to save an extraterrestrial in an unidentified flying object.

This leaves the nagging question: Why the hell do we still need to see the movie? That trailer could have ended far earlier and been far more effective, in large part, because trailers are supposed to whet your appetite for a movie, not present the entire plot. Unless, of course, the movie turns out to have another twist. Real video-game piloting means you learn learn to fly by crashing until you get it right. Perhaps the plot thickens every time Rolfe re-spawns.

4. A Nasty Ending

Newcomers to Rolfe's oeuvre might be surprised when, at the very end of the trailer, the Nerd violently vomits on a woman in oversized glasses. A lot.

The scene will make perfect sense to established fans, however. Painfully prolonged gross-out humor is a trademark of the online series. Huge chunks of Rolfe's video game reviews sound like a sailor with Tourette Syndrome drowning in a sewage plant. His reviews of Bugs Bunny games are especially scatological in ways that I won't elaborate upon since you've just seen a picture of someone losing his soup.

It might seem strange for Rolfe to abruptly engage in gross-out toilet humor after such impressive editing work, props, and special effects, but that just means the Nerd is being true to the work that brought him this far.

Think about it. Rolfe has turned a YouTube account and an interest in ancient Nintendo Entertainment System cartridges into a full feature film. That’s damn near amazing. And it's something I'll be seeing the second it comes out.
