Kathryn Bigelow’s ambitious Oscar contender Zero Dark Thirty started out as a film about the 2001 siege of Tora Bora hunting down al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but as the Academy Award-winner told a rapt audience at the picture's buzz-building debut in Beverly Hills on Sunday, it changed direction in one quick, fateful instant.

“At about 10 o’clock at night on May 1, 2011 we realized we no longer had a project about the hunt for Osama bin Laden,” Bigelow said at a packed post-screening Q&A at the Pacific Design Center, “because he was no longer living.”

Bin Laden’s death sent Bigelow and her Hurt Locker collaborator, screenwriter and journalist Mark Boal, scrambling to incorporate the update into Zero Dark Thirty, a tense semi-fictionalization of the intelligence efforts, and subsequent nighttime raid, that led to the death of bin Laden. Folding actual events and real-life figures into a decade-spanning account, Boal’s script relives the dogged, desperate, and often brutal search for bin Laden through the eyes of a female agent named Maya (Jessica Chastain), a fictional composite based on real women who played key roles in the circuitous, years-long operations that sniffed out bin Laden’s Pakistan hideout.

Chastain, who was a lock for an Oscar nomination before Zero Dark Thirty even debuted, owns the screen as the driven workaholic agent whose tireless fixation on a needle-in-a-haystack lead ultimately proves vital to finding bin Laden. She looks a little too great doing it, too — a pillow-lipped, flame-haired beauty who manages to look luminous even when other characters are helpfully commenting that she’s rundown and haggard. (Offscreen, as in her new GQ UK cover spread, Chastain still has to play the glamour game, as most actresses do in order…

(Offscreen, as in her new GQ UK cover spread, Chastain still has to play the glamour game, as most actresses do in order to vie for awards gold.)

The men around Maya describe her as a “killer,” and though she struggles at first to stomach the sight of a detainee being waterboarded for intel, within a few years she’s adopted the torture tactics that made headlines out of Guantanamo. Boal's script goes heavy on the gender politics and too light on character development, portraying Maya as a woman so devoted to her mission that she has no time for silly things like friends, love, life balance. She's a lone strong woman in a man’s world, an awards-season narrative that pundits will predictably tether to Bigelow as they did when The Hurt Locker made its Oscar run.

Still, the girl power moments are utterly satisfying; when the overlooked Maya makes her presence and contribution known in a roomful of male colleagues by barking an expletive at Tony Soprano himself (James Gandolfini as CIA head Leon Panetta), who can care that she has virtually no back story of her own?

The fund-raising email links back to the OPSEC website which indicates that the Bump in the Road ads "are live right now in Ohio and have impacted Virginia ....but our budget likely won't last to November 6th," adding: "We have to count on you to keep these ads running."

We've got a major problem....In just a few days, National Geographic Channel will begin broadcasting "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden," even after reporting by the New York Times and other media outlets disclosed that the timing and editing of the film by Obama mega-donor and Hollywood liberal Harvey Weinstein were orchestrated to use the heroic work of U.S. Special Operations Forces to promote President Obama's re-election. OPSEC's not going take this sitting down.

If we can raise the funds necessary -- we're going to air our hard-hitting ad, "Bump In The Road," right along-side the documentary on National Geographic Channel. Every person who watches will know how this documentary is exploiting service members, divulging national secrets that are putting special forces lives at risk, and is timed to be nothing more than an ad for President Obama.

[Name Withheld], please make an urgent donation of $25, $50, $100 or more right now to help OPSEC send a powerful message to Obama, Hollywood liberal Harvey Weinstein, and anyone else who wants to exploit the hard work of America's Special Forces that they will have to score political points elsewhere!

It's truly sad that once again, Special Forces operations are being used as a political pawn to win votes for Obama's reelection....not to mention the further leaks of tactics and methods that will further jeopardize future missions against Al Qaeda. National Geographic's Channel own President even admitted that, "that some people were suspicious of the film's intentions."

[In the original email, a link to the NY Times article on the editing of Seal Team Six appears here. (Boldface ours)]

Our ad hits the Obama Administration hard for lying about the attacks in Libya that cost the U.S. Ambassador, two former SEALs and another U.S. diplomat their lives while also having politicized the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

So will you make an urgent donation to help us run this ad side-by-side with Harvey Weinstein's exploitive Seal Team Six documentary? It's absolutely critical we raise the funds necessary to get our response running right along side this TV program.

Playing politics with national security is wrong and endangers American lives. It will only result in special forces coming home in flag draped coffins because their missions have been reduced to petty political games in place of protecting America.

Thanks,

I mean, how fantastically striking is the above image of Chastain, her shadow, and the American flag? Chastain plays a CIA operative attempting to locate the al-Qaeda leader, who was killed while in hiding in Pakistan nearly ten years after the 9/11 attacks.

Chastain is joined by Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, Chris Pratt, Joel Edgerton, and more in the tale of how a global network of operatives joined forces to bring bin Laden down. Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal's research for the film had come under scrutiny by right wing watchdogs, though that flap has died down in recent months.

For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military operatives, working in secret across the globe, devoted themselves to a single goal: to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty reunites the Oscar(R) winning team of director-producer Kathryn Bigelow and writer-producer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) for the story of history's greatest manhunt for the world's most dangerous man.

Osama Bin Laden Raid Film Seal Team Six To Air 48 Hours Before Election
Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden is the first high-profile dramatisation of the attack on the al-Qaida leader's Pakistan hide-out. The incident, in May 2011, was widely regarded as a coup for the Obama administration, following former President Bush's failed seven-year attempt to catch Bin Laden "dead or alive." Produced by the Weinstein Company, the film will be broadcast on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday November 4th, The Guardian reports.

David O. Russell took over the project that was at first titled American Bullshit from Ben Affleck. Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale were attached to star, but then Jeremy Renner signed on to replace Bale and Amy Adams joined the cast. But now Bale is back and the project is untitled. It is based on a true story about an infamous con artist (Bale) and his partner/love interest (Adams) who are working with a federal agent (Cooper) to take on dirty politicians and mobsters, Vulture reports.

CNN Launches Unit to Acquire Documentary Films for Theaters and Television
CNN Films will secure feature-length documentaries to air on CNN and CNN International as well as for theatrical distribution. The move is part of a wider strategy to acquire original non-fiction content to complement CNN's news programs. Girl Rising, a film which inspired a global action campaign to promote girls' education, will air in spring 2013, Deadline reports.

Specialty Box Office: Paperboy Strong in Debut; House I Live In, Wuthering Heights, The Oranges Fair
Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy lead the pack of specialty newcomers with a solid $110,033 at 11 locations and an average of $10,003. That gives the Oscar-nominated director a respectable first showing for his follow-up to his lauded 2009 film Precious, although it falls short of spectacular. Even so, it bested the weekend’s other new titles in limited release. Only Abramorama’s House I Live In came close with a $9,827 average in 2 theaters, Deadline reports.

Speculation ran somewhat rampant that Katheryn Bigelow received inside help in crafting her latest action-thriller Zero Dark Thirty, her upcoming follow-up to her Oscar-winning turn with The Hurt Locker. Tempers flared when President Obama's administration was accused of giving Bigelow insight into the mission that killed al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden back in May 2011, but she denied the access. Originally set for an October 2012 release, Sony delayed the date so as to avoid being further embroiled in any political controversy ahead of the U.S. election in November. Coming in at one-minute, fifteen seconds, the teaser is definitely that.

The trailer opens up with an eerie aerial view of Lower Manhattan and voiceovers hinting at clues to the terrorist mastermind's location, rising tension and eventually what appears to be a satellite view of bin Laden's fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The film, which stars Joel Edgerton, Mark Strong Scott Adkins, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Ehle and Chris Pratt will certainly be an anticipated Oscar-contender this fall.

Nah, who are we kidding -- I'm betting the world is ready to eat this stuff up. Also betting on that are director John Lyde and the makers of Osombie, who have put together a teaser reel of footage full of zombie decapitations and love scenes (of course!) to garner finishing funds for their indie production, which shot Utah for Afghanistan last fall. The synopsis of Osombie, as if you needed to know anything more:

The story follows Dusty, a yoga instructor from Colorado, who is on a desperate rescue mission to save her crazy brother Derek, a conspiracy theorist who is convinced Osama Bin Laden is still alive, despite having been buried at sea. In Afghanistan, Dusty falls in with a team of NATO Special Forces on a secret assignment. Turns out Derek is not so crazy after all, and that Osama has returned from his watery grave and is making an army of zombie terrorists. When the group crashes headlong into the growing zombie apocalypse, Dusty and the troops must find and destroy the root of the zombie insurgency before it infests the rest of the world.

All in all, the Osama hook should give Osombie a bit more exposure than your average B-movie independent genre flick, but still expect it to fare best on DVD. Even so, it raises an interesting question: With other dramatic retellings of bin Laden's death in the works, are we ready to see the al-Quada leader come back to life in the movies -- at least, with comedy paving the way first?

The conservative "watchdog" group Judicial Watch has sued the CIA and the Defense Department, alleging a failure to comply with requests to know what was discussed in consultations with Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal about the Hurt Locker duo's follow-up charting the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Great.

In a nutshell: JW sent a Freedom of Information Act request about the meetings -- themselves merely alleged at this point -- to determine what classified details (if any) about the bin Laden mission were shared with the Oscar winners. Both organizations failed to respond in the 20-business-day window required by FOIA, and so... yeah. Now there is a lawsuit. I can't even deal. Here, from TheWrap:

As of January 12, the DoD and the CIA "have failed to produce any records responsive to plaintiff's requests or demonstrate that responsive records are exempt from production," the suit says. "Nor have they indicated whether or when they will produce any responsive records."

In addition to information regarding the alleged meetings and communications, Judicial Watch is also seeking compensation for attorneys' fees and other legal costs related to the lawsuit.

The filing of the suit comes less than two weeks after Congressman Peter King, senior Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, said the Office of the Inspector General at Defense was launching an investigation over the alleged meetings.

Washington! Getting Things Done Since Never.™ Anyway, Bigelow and Boal have specifically responded to King's pseudo-pissed hotdogging before, and this is all just another compulsion of the "small-government" elite to control everything, up to and including the Stop Online Privacy Act, in the name of national security and jobs jobs jobs that 10 percent of you don't even have and won't even have…

And now you can pull your hands out of the prayin' position and stop begging prison prophet T.I. to bestow upon you his strong words of wisdom about serious subjects such as equal rights, because he has finally rubbed his only two brain cells together to make a thought! I know, it's what we've all been waiting for. Vibe Magazine caught up with T.I. in between prison sentences and asked him if he thinks all Americans should have the same rights. T.I. said that if the The Un-American Activities Committee still existed today, gays who complained about Tracy Morgan's "I would stab my son if he acted gay" rant should be investigated.

Man, I will say this, the funniest joke I ever heard Tracy say during a stand-up was, ‘C’mon man, I think gay people are too sensitive. If you can take a dick, you can take a joke.’ [Cracks up laughing.] That shit was funny to me. And it’s kind of true.’ While T.I. makes clear that he supports anyone’s sexual preference, he then connects, in his opinion, a current oversensitivity among gay people with a consequential and ironic offense of the First Amendment. “They’re like,‘If you have an opinion against us, we’re gonna shut you down.’ ... That’s not American. If you’re gay you should have the right to be gay

…

T.I. on all Americans having equal rights
If you’re gay you should have the right to be gay in peace, and if you’re against it you should have the right to be against it in peace.’

Now, I can take a dick and I can take a joke, and I can even take both of them at the same time (especially when the joke is the dick), but where was the joke in Tracy's "I WOULD SHANK MY SON IN THE HEAD" rant? If that is considered a joke, then the shit jokes I try to tell on this blog every day would count as jokes too, and then we'd all be in trouble.

Well, if this whole "lifetime jailbird" thing doesn't work out for T.I.'s Jiminy Cricket-looking ass, then he has a bright future ahead of him as Mel Gibson and Michael Richards' publicist.

And the fun didn't stop there, T.I. then talked to Vibe about Osama Bin Laden's "death":

T.I. on being skeptical of Bin Laden's death
The conversation shifts from Muammar Gaddafi’s death—which occurred five days prior—to Osama Bin Laden’s assassination to both Eastern giant’s once empowered relationship with the U.S. government. “It’s like everybody that the U.S. was besties with, years later they’re the worst person in the world,” says Tip. "My question is what character traits do they possess now that they didn’t possess when y’all were besties? What made it go astray, and who’s to say they were on the dishonest end of that?”

The politic’n doesn’t stop there. Before an article can be selected from the "Osama Bin Laden killed" search, T.I. twists his lips in sarcastic fashion and shoots, "If that really happened.”

So you’re skeptical about the legitimacy of Osama’s death?
"Man, I’m a conspiracy theorist by nature. You can’t experience the federal penal system and not be somewhat skeptical."

And this concludes today's "This Is Your Brain On Sizzurp" public service announcement.

The Departed-like film — it’s about a DEA agent and undercover naval intelligence officer who “investigate each other while each steals the mobs money” — was originally eyed for director David O. Russell and star Vince Vaughn, but they both appear out now; Blake Masters wrote the script.
· Republican New York congressman and House Committee on Homeland Security chairman Peter King has it in his head that the Obama administration released classified information to Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal and Sony Pictures to help with their upcoming and untitled Osama bin Laden film. Bigelow and Boal released a statement about their film that didn’t actually address King’s complaints, but White House press secretary Jay Carney did offer one retort: “I would hope that as we face the continued threat from terrorism, the House Committee on Homeland Security would have more important topics to discuss than a movie.” [Deadline]

· Morgan Freeman is in talks to join Jesse Eisenberg, Melanie Laurent and the also in-talks Mark Ruffalo and Amanda Seyfried in Now You See Me. The Louis Leterrier-directed film is about magicans who rob banks, and the FBI agent tasked to stopping them. Freeman would play “Thaddeus, an ex-magician who has made a career out of exposing other magicians’ illusions, making him a despised figure within the magic community.” GOB would be very displeased.
· From the world of science, it turns out that spoilers are actually good for you. Bruce Willis was dead the entire time in The Sixth Sense. Feel better?
· Dermot Mulroney has been added to the cast of Stoker. The Shadow of a Doubt-y film from Wentworth Miller and director Chan-wook Park follows a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who must contend with her evil uncle (Matthew Goode) after the death of her father (Mulroney). (Spoilers make you feel good, remember?) Nicole Kidman and Jacki Weaver (Team Jacki!) also star.
