Between Puss in Boots, In Time, and Rum Diary, I didn’t see much reason to fork over $13 at the movies this weekend. (Though I did see Like Crazy — or as I like to call it, Jennifer Lawrence Thanklessly Pouts in a Supporting Role.) Instead of paying up, let’s read up on Twitter’s feelings about these three new films. Prepare to have mixed feelings about Justin Timberlake by the time we hit #1.

Whilst watching the Shrek franchise, you may have wondered: How does Puss, the swashbuckling cat voiced by Antonio Banderas, justify donning footwear but not clothes? A new video for his upcoming spin-off movie, Puss in Boots, has your answer. This movie star endorses a freer, more versatile lifestyle choice: No-pants pants!
He’s got a multiple-point argument here: “You want pants that are comfortable. You want pants that make you look good. That’s why you want… no pants at all!”
The acknowledgment of Puss’s cartoon, kid-safe physiology (i.e. lack of, well, parts that require pants, if you catch my drift) earns the makers of Puss in Boots extra points in my book. And thank you, DreamWorks, for the copious slo-mo crotch-shots that prove the point. (Do I detect the wicked sense of humor of producer Guillermo del Toro at play here?)
Puss in Boots, directed by Chris Miller (Shrek the Third), follows Puss’s adventures pre-Shrek as a deliverer of justice out to stop the nefarious Jack and Jill with the help of Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). It will be released in 3-D on November 4.
Full Story »In high school, my friend Monica would sit behind me in class and draw pictures of cockeyed old men in wizard hats with patchy chest hair and scary, idiotic grins. It was weird and unsettling and hilarious (and I should be ashamed for encouraging it), but that was the point. In the case of the new Puss In Boots poster, we get all of that unrestrained, ambiguous sexuality, but with little of the winking creepiness. It’s just creepy — the way a strutting cat with a sincere stare in jaunty boots ought to be, frankly.
Dreamworks, you’ve gone too far! I look forward to the vocal talents of Amy Sedaris, Billy Bob Thornton, and of course Antonio Banderas, but when Puss In Boots abandons Shrek and earns his own movie poster, he is exposed for the naughty toon he is! I shouldn’t be surprised that a leering creature named Puss is a bit unnerving, but he looks like a sultry sheriff in Aristocats western slashfic. Purr-verted!
