Rashida Jones filtered her own relationship history — and a few heart-wrenching break-ups — into this weekend’s Celeste and Jesse Forever, an L.A.-set look at one couple’s struggle to remain besties through separation, divorce, and the complicated disentanglement that follows the world’s best-worst break-up.
Co-written with fellow actor Will McCormack, whom Jones dated for three weeks years ago, the sweet, affecting dramedy is peppered with moments inspired by real life events that carry Celeste through her journey of painful but necessary self-discovery — including one legendarily awful date with a guy who turned out to be, in Jones’ words, “a serial masturbator.”
Like Celeste, Jones, who looks back on her past relationships as life lessons, has learned the hard way that not all love stories are meant to last. “I’m no better at break-ups,” she admits. “I haven’t gotten any stronger, I just try to learn my lesson in a way where I don’t have to re-learn it, and that’s the only thing I can do,” she says.
As I was watching, I realized these are revelations you can only really have by experiencing them firsthand.
Yeah, totally. Will always says, “The cure for the pain is the pain.” I hate when he says that, but I definitely feel like it’s the first step in real adulthood, when you’re like, “Oh, things are not going to be the way I thought they would.” In some ways they’re going to be better, and in some ways they’re going to be way worse. But regardless, I have no control over it, and my need to control it only makes it worse. It definitely came from a real place. It’s a very personal story for me, and hopefully it’s the kind of thing I can leave in the movie and…

Park City did indeed turn out to be a robust marketplace this year, with buyers snapping up over two dozen features and docs out of Sundance 2012. Ranging from genre pleasers to indie charmers to potential future Oscar picks and beyond – and veering from critical fest duds to overwhelming crowd favorites – the class of Sundance ’12 is an intriguingly mixed-but-mostly-promising bag of films that will be dotting the cinematic landscape in the year or so to come. Here’s an updated comprehensive look at what sold and which films you should be looking forward to.
2 Days in New York (Magnolia) – The busy distributor (which also picked up V/H/S and Queen of Versailles earlier in the fest) also nabbed Julie Delpy’s sequel to 2 Days in Paris, which Delpy directed and co-stars in opposite Chris Rock.
Arbitrage (Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions) – Nicholas Jarecki’s dramatic feature-filmmaking debut stars Richard Gere as a billionaire hedge-fund fraud seeking to cash in before he’s exposed. Susan Sarandon, Brit Marling and Tim Roth co-star. Look for the studio duo to duplicate the multi-platform success they enjoyed in 2011 with Margin Call, another financial-world potboiler picked up in Park City.
Beasts of the Southern Wild (Fox Searchlight) – The smallest narrative to get a deal thus far at Sundance comes off of strong buzz and acclaim for the tale of a young girl and her ailing father who live in a fantastical alternate version of the American South; Beasts won the Grand Jury Prize and was hands down the discovery of the fest.
Black Rock (LD Distribution) – Katie Aselton’s thriller about three female friends (Aselton, Lake Bell, Kate Bosworth) surviving a weekend getaway gone wrong was the first Midnight selection to seal a deal, partnering with newbie…

It has been a long, wonderful, trailer-laden lead-up to The Muppets big screen comeback. We’ve enjoyed clever promos of the Green Lantern parody, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo send-up and straight-forward varieties. And now, for the final hurrah before Kermit, Miss Piggy, Jason Segel and the gang storm theaters November 27, here’s the latest (straightforward) preview. Beware! Uplifting spoilers ahead.
Fart shoes! The Swedish chef! A… new Muppet? Hey, why not. The Muppets — including their human friends Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones and Zach Galifianakis — will keep us all company this Thanksgiving.
Verdict: Still seeing this before Hugo.

The Sundance comedy Our Idiot Brother is pretty much perfectly cast: From the titular Paul Rudd role to the hard-edged Elizabeth Banks part to the hipster Zooey Deschanel character, everyone is just right and apparently unafraid of typecasting. In this new trailer, Rudd harries his three sisters (Banks, Deschanel, and typically prickly Emily Mortimer), and Rashida Jones rushes in to act as a saving grace.
I think we’re in for some three-star fare, no? A polite end-of-August romp to ease us back into the school year. My only problem is that the movie seems to stop just short of funny in its exploration of savage siblinghood, even if the camaraderie feels realistic. This is closer to the It’s Complicated school of laughs than the I Love You, Man’s, which is fine. Luckily Jesse Peretz’s direction seems much more assured than it did in his last feature, The Ex.
Verdict: Nimbly imbecilic.

Let Thursday, June 2 officially be known as poster day! On the heels of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, here are six posters from the Jason Bateman/Jennifer Aniston joint Horrible Bosses, where three relatable schlubs toil in hell under the supervision of the titular troika. You’ll be excited to learn the posters look exactly like either a ’90s board game called “Irritation!” or a ’90s WB series called Ugh, Women!

For 8-12 players! Ages 16 and up!

Ugh, Women! starring Colin Ferrell, Jennifer Aniston (who’s looking a lot like Rashida Jones these days, I guess), and Kevin Spacey — with recurring appearances by Tisha Campbell and Countess Vaughn, of course.
Why am I spewing blogger bile? I will so see this.
