He is the Lorax, he speaks for the trees – or at least he would, if he could get a word in edgewise. Because Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, as directed by Chris Renaud and Kyle Balda, is so cluttered — with extra narrative, extra characters, extra everything — that its famously mossy and bossy central figure barely figures into the plot. More a bowdlerization than an adaptation of the great Theodor Geisel’s somber plea for environmental preservation, The Lorax is so big, flashy and redundant that it courts precisely the kind of blind consumerism it’s supposed to be condemning. It doesn’t trust kids to sit still and pay attention for even a minute.
In the book, a young boy approaches the dark lair of the Once-ler, situated in the middle of a bare wasteland. The Once-ler spins a tale about what this godforsaken patch of land used to be like: It was dotted lavishly with Truffula Trees, their tufty heads looking like psychedelic dandelions and smelling of “butterfly milk.” This was a land populated by humming fish and bearlike creatures known as Bar-ba-Loots (“frisking about in their Bar-ba-Loot suits”), and guarded over by the stern, if noodgy, Lorax, who is especially protective of the area’s chief natural resource, those Truffula Trees. The Once-ler begins cutting down the trees for his own gain, initiating a destructive spiral that the book resolves only tentatively – with a single Truffula seed held out as a symbol of hope for the future.
Those simple but potent ingredients aren’t enough for this Lorax, which was adapted – maybe “mauled” is the better word – by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul. The boy who sets the whole story in motion is a pre-teener named Ted (voiced by Zac Efron), who lives in Thneedville, a…

Death continues to wreak fateful havoc in the lives of doomed young persons in next week’s Final Destination 5 (Death doesn’t like to be cheated… out of an opportunity to rake in more money!), but who knows what inventive, grotesque kills await? Play Movieline’s “Guess the Death” and take a stab (ding!) at predicting how each of the film’s cast members (including Emma Bell, Tony Todd, and David Koechner) will meet their maker, based on clues found in these five new stills.
1. Jacqueline MacInnes Wood as Olivia

Death by Ludovico technique! Or, more likely: Lasik gone horribly wrong.
2. Nicholas D’Agosto as Sam

Clutching the railing for dear life, Sam’s little heart gave out from the strain.
3. David Koechner as Dennis

Say it ain’t so, Koechner! Most tragic comic-over-the-cliff death since Rob Riggle in Furry Vengeance? (Apologies for that spoiler alert if you’re still waiting to see Furry Vengeance.) (Condolences if you’ve already seen it.)
4. P.J. Byrne as Isaac

Those acupuncture needles aren’t going to commit freak homicide themselves. ARE THEY??
5. Tony Todd as Bludworth

Death by… bees? CANDYMAN CANDYMAN CANDYMAN CANDYMAN CANDYMAN!
Click for the full gallery of 20+ images from Final Destination 5, in theaters August 12.

Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder Matt Walsh (Outsourced) called on a dozen of his fellow comedians to act in his directorial debut High Road, an improvised film about a weed dealer (James F. Pumphrey) torn between his “career,” his musical aspirations, and his pregnant girlfriend (Abby Elliott). Hit the trailer after the jump and see how many of your favorite comedy players, including veterans of The State, Saturday Night Live, and Walsh’s short-lived series Players show up in the lo-fi indie comedy. (Well hello, Horatio Sanz!)
Okay, here’s a cheat sheet: Lizzy Caplan, Abby Elliott, Rob Riggle, Ed Helms, Joe Lo Truglio, Kyle Gass, Horatio Sanz, Andrew Daly, and more co-star with Pumphrey in the film, which is based loosely on a drug dealer Walsh knew once in Chicago who went on to enjoy a successful career as a writer.
Walsh, who has appeared in every single Todd Phillips movie to date, co-wrote High Road with Josh Weiner and gathered so much footage that he reportedly began editing with an eight-hour cut of the film. The 83-minute final version premieres at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 29.
