It is by far and away no secret that Hollywood compensation for a certain cadre of stars have been rocketing beyond the stratosphere for some time now, but one A-lister, in the form of Brad Pitt, says that the era of paychecks reaching into the tens of millions for some may be coming to a close.
Both he and his partner Angelina Jolie have topped (or nearly so) the scales for their movies in the past decade, with Pitt garnering a cool $25 million per pic. Not bad, but almost a paltry sum when compared to Tom Cruise, for instance, which Forbes listed as commanding a cool $75 million in 2012. But Pitt says he thinks that the conditions for unbelievable sums (at least for the bottom 99.7 per cent) may be heading back down to the mere stratosphere.
“Yeah, that thing died,” Pitt said when asked if fellow A-listers can still easily command a $10 or so million per movie, according to BBC. “That arithmetic doesn’t really work right now…that deal’s not flying these days.”
Going further on the economics of Hollywood right now, Pitt added, “”It’s a really interesting time. A lot of the studios have been challenged because of the economic downturn as well, so they’ve been betting on bigger, more tent pole kinds of things. At the same time that opens up a vacuum for really interesting new filmmakers to come in.”
Pitt debuted Killing Them Softly in Cannes and is a producer on the title that will head to U.S. theaters next month. Opening early overseas helped this week’s Battleship quietly amass $215 million before its domestic debut, and a few international markets (including Japan, Hong Kong, and New Zealand) may similarly see emphatic pre-U.S. openings for Sony’s July 3 tent pole The Amazing Spider-Man when it opens in countries like India days before hitting theaters stateside. Shall we call it, as one Sony Pictures India rep suggests, the “neener-neener” bump? “Each of the Spider-Man franchise films has broken records on its release in this territory. We are very confident that Indian audiences will enjoy the new reboot of the franchise even more because they are watching it before the U.S.” [THR]
It seems we’re all about LEGO everything these days; we’ve already got LEGO versions of half of this summer’s tent pole slate. But there’s something special in the latest installment of LEGOmania, a gem of a re-envisioning commissioned by Disney Pixar that recreates the first Cars 2 trailer entirely in LEGO.
French Canadian director Patrick Boivin was tapped to bring the Cars 2-LEGO mash-up to life, and the result is a charming, slightly herky-jerky stop motion re-imagining reminiscent of the childhood feeling of playing make-believe with toys that makes you kind of wish the entire movie was going to look this way.

Deadline reports that visual effects veteran Tim Miller (X-Men, X2, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) has graduated to the helm of Fox’s X-Men Origins: Deadpool, which is currently being written by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. But with its star currently carrying another studio’s comic book tent pole (Green Lantern), how soon will Deadpool happen with Reynolds — and will it be the Deadpool movie that Reynolds wants to make?
Speaking last weekend at WonderCon, Reynolds expressed a desire to reprise his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, the disfigured mercenary he played in 2009’s Wolverine, but didn’t reveal anything in the way of when said film would happen. Moreover, Reynolds insisted that if a Deadpool film did come to pass, it would be done the “right” way — as a hard R.
At the time, that kind of candid, crowd-pleasing admission seemed to suggest that either Reynolds had serious input into the future of a Deadpool film, or that his hopes for said film were so unlikely to happen that he could make wild promises in the hypothetical. A few weeks ago, producer Lauren Shuler Donner described Deadpool as an R-rated comedy, adding that Reynolds was closely involved in the scripting process.
Fox hiring Miller on as director moves the project one step closer to fruition, so the good news for those who were skeptical in the face of Reynolds’ promise is that it looks like it really could happen. Screenwriters Reese and Wernick seem to be the right guys to pen a cheeky, violent R-rated Deadpool movie.
