The past month’s been slow at the cineplex, but you can thank Paranormal Activity 3 for giving the people what they want: graininess! The second sequel trounces everything in its path this week, especially other newcomers like The Three Musketeers and Johnny English Reborn. The tally follows.
1. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3: $26,235,000
2. FOOTLOOSE: $3,475,000 ($23,488,031)
3. REAL STEEL: $3,108,000 ($59,015,640)
4. THE THREE MUSKETEERS: $2,900,000
5. THE IDES OF MARCH: $1,530,000 ($25,789,326)
Also of note: Johnny English Reborn came in at $1.14 million at #8, but it’s poised to make $100 million overseas. Who cares about the U.S. anymore? I’m over it.

Remakes often suck — but when they’re total stylistic upheavals of the source material, I’m more optimistic. Would you see a whacked-out, space-age remake of a classic period piece like Little Dorrit? I would! Or better yet, this weekend’s ridiculous, steampunk The Three Musketeers in 3-D? It puts the “rich” in Richelieu and the “dumbass” in Dumas. I dig it! Ahead, we investigate five other Victorian novels worth revisiting in a fulgent 3-D experience. Put on your special glasses, Heathcliff.
Shark Night in Walden Pond
Henry David Thoreau wrote Walden as a reflection on transcendentalism and self-reliance — but can he rely on himself when a motorized titanium shark jumps out of Emerson’s beloved waters and threatens to cut short his spiritual rediscovery with the gnashing of its three-foot molars? Solitude is slashed with a dorsal fin in Walden Night 3-D, a horror movie where there’s no time for civil disobedience.
Suggested casting: Tom Hanks picks up his solitary instincts from Cast Away for this challenging, gory role as the resilient, but thoroughly maimed Thoreau.
Bleak House’s Anime Purging of Secondary Characters
Most of the time, Dickens’ Bleak House is handled as a miniseries due to its extraordinary length and vast amount of supporting characters, but in Bleak 3-D, the minor characters are treated as collectible, Pokemon-esque scamps who fly at the screen in a closing, 3-D animated sequence. Gotta catch ‘em all — if you want to understand Dickens’ assault on the flaws of the British justice system. This could be taught in middle schools.
Suggested casting: Judi Dench as the narrator and Bleak House Pokemaster Esther Summerson
Vanity Fair in Candy Land
William Makepiece Thackeray’s satire of British society has been rebooted several times,…

You’ll read a lot in the coming 48 hours about how Michael Bay is the scourge of the Earth, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the dumbest movie of the summer, and the fact that it will make money only proves audiences are stupid. One retort for those of you who actually like Dark of the Moon? At least it isn’t The Three Musketeers. Click ahead to watch the latest trailer for his Alexandre Dumas “adaptation.”
If you don’t remember giant flying zeppelins, massive explosions, and catchphrases like the Street Fighter-approved “round two” in the Dumas source tome, you’re not alone. This is based on Dumas’s Three Musketeers like Unstoppable was based on a true story. That said, Logan Lerman does make a charming d’Artagnan, and Orlando Bloom seems to be channeling the spirit of Gary Oldman circa The Professional for his role as the film’s villain. One question needs to be asked, however: In Michael Bay’s worst nightmare, is he Paul W.S. Anderson?
VERDICT: Needs more Optimus Prime.

With love in the air — or, more accurately, the Royal Wedding permeating news coverage — what better time than now for Summit Entertainment to release a new picture of Logan Lerman and some fair maiden about to kiss in The Three Musketeers. Let’s hope that upon completion, this lip-lock is a bit more passionate than the first kiss from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. (Come on, Prince William; you’ve got to lock that down.) Anyway, click ahead to see a first look at The Three Musketeers.

Click through to Moviefone for two more exclusive looks at The Three Musketeers, which hits theaters in October.
