The Bourne Legacy, The Campaign and Hope Springs are among the latest in studio fare churned out for your summer popcorn pleasure. And some – at least – are worth a view. But if you’re itching for something else beyond the grain, check out the latest from Spike Lee, whose Red Hook Summer begins its roll out this weekend with an expansion set throughout the rest of summer. Actress/director Julie Delpy’s sequel to her hilarious 2 Days In Paris opens, but this time she trades Paris for New York in, fittingly, 2 Days In New York, in which she stars opposite Chris Rock. And David Duchovny stars in Goats, which is finally making its way to the screen after a decade in the making. More teasers, insight and films here beyond the blockbuster…
2 Days in New York
Director: Julie Delpy
Writer: Julie Delpy, Alexia Landeau, Alexandre Nahon
Cast: Julie Delpy, Chris Rock, Albert Delpy Alexia Landeau, Alexandre Nahon, Daniel Bruhl
Opens: New York in two locations this weekend with other cities to follow.
The followup to her 2007 feature 2 Days In Paris, which took in a cool $4.433 million Stateside for that film’s distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films, the current title basically replicates Paris’ dialogue-heavy banter, open talk about sexuality and crossing social taboos, but this time Chris Rock stars as her love interest and New York is the setting.
Though she has been acting since she was discovered by Jean-Luc Godard (who cast her in his 1985 Détective) and has a half-dozen features under her belt as director, the ever present challenge of financing played havoc with 2 Days In New York. “It’s fine if you have the money, and we had the money, but when the money fell apart…

Before there was Anna Wintour, The Devil Wears Prada – and even ahead of the days when they put the ‘super‘ before the ‘model‘ – Diana Vreeland reigned as top fashion maven in the U.S. Naturally, the woman who “discovered” Lauren Bacall, launched Twiggy, advised Jackie O., partied with Mick Jagger and once said, “”The bikini is the most important thing since the atom bomb,” was ripe for a documentary. Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel heads to theaters later next month, but distributor Samuel Goldwyn gives a snapshot of Vreeland in the feature’s new trailer below.
“You can see and feel the approaching revolution in clothes,” Diana Vreeland says in the trailer. Footage follows with praise and flashy images from high-style celebs and designers she influenced. The trailer also sneaks great scenes of her taking in New York night-life with a great shot of her taking a puff from a ciggy while chatting up Andy Warhol. “I wanted to get where the action was,” she said with a devilish smile. Journalist Bob Colacello recalls a great Vreeland quote: “You’re not supposed to give people what they want, you’re supposed to give them what they don’t know that they want yet.” The trailer also includes snappy tidbits from fashion designers Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, Diane von Furstenberg and a great little outburst from Manolo Blahnik.
Synopsis: Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel is an intimate portrait and a vibrant celebration of one of the most influential women of the 20th century, an enduring icon whose influence changed the face of fashion, beauty, art, publishing and culture forever. During her fifty year reign as the “Empress of Fashion,” she launched Twiggy, advised Jackie O and coined some of fashion’s most eloquent proverbs such as “the bikini is

Speculation ran somewhat rampant that Katheryn Bigelow received inside help in crafting her latest action-thriller Zero Dark Thirty, her upcoming follow-up to her Oscar-winning turn with The Hurt Locker. Tempers flared when President Obama’s administration was accused of giving Bigelow insight into the mission that killed al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden back in May 2011, but she denied the access. Originally set for an October 2012 release, Sony delayed the date so as to avoid being further embroiled in any political controversy ahead of the U.S. election in November. Coming in at one-minute, fifteen seconds, the teaser is definitely that.
The trailer opens up with an eerie aerial view of Lower Manhattan and voiceovers hinting at clues to the terrorist mastermind’s location, rising tension and eventually what appears to be a satellite view of bin Laden’s fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
The film, which stars Joel Edgerton, Mark Strong Scott Adkins, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Ehle and Chris Pratt will certainly be an anticipated Oscar-contender this fall.
Synopsis from ENTV: The official teaser trailer for Katherine Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty. This is Bigelow’s follow up to The Hurt Locker with writer Mark Boal. The film chronicles the US search and killing of Al Queda leader Osama Bin Laden. The Navy SEAL Team 6 tracks down wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden.

This Is The Look: Javier Bardem As An Evil Blonde
If a mash-up of Carolina Herrera and Gary Oldman as Dracula went to the HERP DERP Salon and told his stylist, “Gurl, give me the Walter Mercado,” this is the beautiful image that would make every mirror in the place steam up. One thing Hollywood has taught us is that the more jacked up Javier Bardem’s hair is in a movie, the eviler his character is. So this is one is definitely skipping hand-in-hand with Lucifer and Pimp Mama Kris on a trailer of charred innocent souls. Bitch is that evil.
Below is the new trailer for The Queen’s homeboy’s new movie Skyfall and besides the regulars, it also stars Javie, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Wishshaw as Q, Albert Finney, Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe. Open your eyes as wide as possible to take in all of Javier’s peroxide glamour:
Daniel and Javier’s scene! Javier is serving up some blond queen cuntiness. When Javier coos at Bond, “Just look at you, chasing spies,” I expected Bond to snap back with, “Just look at YOU, bitch, chasing Swedish guinea pigs to make wigs out of.” Congratulations to Sam Mendes for giving us the most glamorous evil Bond queen of ALL-TIME!
Here’s Daniel, Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Renner at last night’s NYC premiere of that Bourne Identity reboot. I am not interested in that Bourne shit if it doesn’t have a straw-haired Javier Bardem in it.

“I didn’t just want to come here and say I made a record in Jamaica and grew some dreadlocks,” insists rapper Snoop Dogg in the trailer for Reincarnated, announced today as an official selection of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. “Rastafari called me.” Watch the trailer for Reincarnated for your first glimpse of Snoop Dogg — or rather, Snoop Lion, his newly minted reggae identity — leaving hip-hop behind to sing and smoke up a storm in his new rasta life.
The doc, a co-production of Vice Films and Snoop’s own Snoopadelic Films, probably isn’t a terribly incisive or objective look at the musician’s musical shift, and it’s unclear how fleeting an alter ego “Snoop Lion” will be in the long run. But as the trailer speeds through a montage of Snoop’s past, it makes a case for why the erstwhile Calvin Broadus might have sought spiritual rebirth after a decades-long career in the rap game that has seen friends and collaborators pass on, sometimes violently.

Beyond the personal loss of figures like Tupac and Nate Dogg, Snoop’s musical career has seemed to plateau in the last decade; how did the slim (with the tilted brim) rapper behind 1993’s “Doggystyle” wind up phoning in verses on Katy Perry Top 40 hits, writing rap songs about True Blood and roasting Donald Trump?
Seizing the opportunity for Ali-esque cross-cultural/getting-in-touch-with-his-roots drama, Reincarnated came about when Snoop traveled to Jamaica to record with the producer Diplo. “While there,” explains the synopsis, “Snoop finds himself embraced by the Jamaican people, is positively impacted by Rastafarian culture, and becomes reincarnated as Snoop Lion.”
Verdict: It all sounds so perfectly calculated. And yet, compared to Snoop’s post-fame exploits, it might also be his most sincere artistic expression…

Walking out of The Watch, Saturday Night Live writer Akiva Schaffer’s garrulous but indistinctive sophomore directing effort, a young woman in front of me complained to her friend. “What do you even say about that?” he’d asked. “I have no idea,” she said. She only had to write up a list of the movie’s pros and cons, and even then she could think of but one item for the former column.
It’s not that The Watch is terrible – it’s not not terrible, but there are sufficient diversions and more punitive ways to spend your evening – but that it’s one of those smoke bomb comedies that seems to disappear even while you’re watching, leaving no trace of itself behind. A studio gumbo of proven quantities – here’s Vince Vaughn doing his flirty, towel-snapping thing, Ben Stiller playing a tightly wound Citizen Costco, um, rabid aliens, beer- and pot-sealed enshrinement of male bonding – The Watch leaves very little to say because, despite the near-constant jabber, it says, and aspires to, so very little.
There is a concept, of course, and it’s high enough to track with those non-native Apatowians (Seth Rogen co-wrote the script with Jared Stern and his longtime writing partner Evan Goldberg) sadly unable to keep up with the movie’s urban thesaurus worth of masturbation references. Home team-loving Evan (Stiller) is what Max Fischer might be like if he grew up to manage a Costco and moved to Middle America. Trying to prop up his flagging self-image with extra credit community work, Evan is also trying (and failing) to have a child with his adorable wife (Rosemarie DeWitt). When his overnight security guard is found in a pile of viscera and green goo, Evan responds the only way he knows how: By deputizing himself as the…

Slick and mean and full of piss and chicken grease, Killer Joe has worse manners than its deadly, courtly antihero. But in its own way and to its own detriment, William Friedkin’s splattery, southern gothic return to the screen seeks to amuse as well as shake and stir. What begins as a set of open provocations and genre tweaks propping up the story of a trashily blended Texas family’s encounter with an alpha hitman takes a turn through Coen and Lynch Lanes before winding up at the corner of Friedkin and Peckinpah. There a trailer ignites with violence and the tone of alternately abject and mordant depravity begins flailing like a rogue firehose.
That the Smiths are low, stupid people is easily understood, but Friedkin hardly tires of reminding us. Killer Joe opens on the middle of a stormy Texas night, and the wailing and window-banging of a fuck-up named Chris (Emile Hirsch), who is locked out of the family’s trailer. When his stepmother Sharla (Gina Gershon) finally responds, Chris (and the audience) comes face to fat, mossy minge with her naked crotch. Chris’s complaints find no truck with his exceptionally dense, defeated dad Ansel (Thomas Haden Church), who echoes Sharla’s involuted logic about not being expecting to find her stepson on the other side of the door. It feels unpromising that what could be a funny gag gets lost in the scene-flattening commotion of idiocy, which too often gets cranked so high little else gets through.
The Smiths have all kinds of boundary issues, not least when it comes to Dottie (Juno Temple), the gauzy baby doll daughter with a couple of little pink screws loose. Dottie sleepwalks, and either has crazy good hearing or crazy-girl intuition, because she cottons to Chris’s…

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña are two L.A. cops who are on a hit list after they confiscate a drug gang’s cache of bling, firearms and cash during a traffic stop in one of the city’s most notorious precincts in the upcoming crime drama End of Watch. In this first clip from the film, a clean-shaven (and smooth skulled) Gyllenhaal and Peña share a moment of levity while on patrol with some chatty back-and-forths about each setting each other up on dates.
The pair bond about hooking up, with Peña’s character Officer Zavala telling his officer buddy to pick someone from his background: “Sweet brown sugar,” he croons. Gyllenhaal’s Officer Brian Taylor launches into female character voice in playful mocking, spurning Peña to do a bit of tit-for-tat. The clip shows a moment of levity compared to the official trailer (below) which is chock-full of all the action and firearms to be expected from a film about police and drug cartels.
End of Watch is directed by David Ayer, whose directorial debut Harsh Times also took place in South Central L.A. John Lesher produced the feature, which will be released September 28th in the U.S.
End of Watch also stars Anna Kendrick, Cody Horn and America Ferrera.
The film’s trailer below:
