Tuesday, Movieline brought you word about a special audio recording of Go the F**k to Sleep that Werner Herzog did for the New York Public Library to celebrate the release of Adam Mansbach’s new children’s book. Good news to report: a clip of the recording has surfaced online, and it’s as Herzog-ian as you would hope. “The windows are dark in the town child. The whales huddled down in the deep. I’ll read you one last book, if you swear you’ll go…” Well, you know. This is hilarious. Click through to watch.
Applause! Go the F**k to Sleep completists can also listen to the official Samuel L. Jackson audiobook recording right here.

Did you enjoy listening to the dulcet tones of Werner Herzog during his latest film, The Cave of Forgotten Dreams? If so — and if you live in the New York area — Movieline has just the event for you: the director — and beloved talk show guest — did an audio recording of the new children’s book Go the F**k to Sleep, and it will be unveiled tonight at the New York Public Library. Tickets are even available. Click through for a taste of what to expect.
Herzog’s audio recording will premiere at the New York Public Library event to celebrate Tuesday’s release of the Adam Mansbach mock children’s book. With verses like, “The cubs and the lions are snoring, / Wrapped in a big snuggly heap. / How come you can do all this other great shit / But you can’t lie the fuck down and sleep?”, the director’s reading will likely be 100 percent more entertaining than those YouTube videos of a Herzog impressionist reading Where’s Waldo. At the very least, this one will actually be authentic.
If you can’t make it to the event tonight, there’s some good news: Audible.com has made the official Samuel L. Jackson reading of Sleep available as a free download for today only. Click through to hear a sample and to get the audiobook yourself. Unfortunately, the Herzog-voiced version is not yet online, but Movieline will update you if/when it becomes available.

There are precious few mysteries left in a world scoured by satellites, street-cams, and all other manner of ravening photographer’s eye. It’s tough to believe in monsters, magic, lost islands, or even private lives in an era of wall-to-wall coverage, where every surveilled surface is space lost to possibility. It’s Google’s Earth, we’re just zooming in on it. But instead of finally nailing down Big Foot or tracking the elusive unicorn, what’s most often mined from the previously uncharted corners of our newly comprehensive, woefully literal view of the planet — as this week’s harvest of reputation-charring images, courtesy of Anthony Weiner, reminds us — are banal reflections of our own persistent vanity, loneliness, and malignance.
Debates surrounding the photo-driven scandal of the day have a disingenuously ethological bent: Monster or all too human? Aberration or second nature? As if we all don’t know this story and its unsatisfying narrative limits. And yet delimiting what little room is left to dream about each other is part of the project of klieg-lighting the corners of the world. Jumping online to make love (or lust) objects out of distant strangers could be seen, among other things, as a response to that tendency. On the other hand, as Stephen Colbert joked in his interview with Cave of Forgotten Dreams director Werner Herzog, even the bodies painted in one of the few truly wondrous, mysterious places to be discovered in recent memory could be reduced to mere examples of “cave porn,” or cited as proof of humanity’s innate impulse to represent and…

You know how some mornings you wake up and go to work and browse the Web and wonder what you ever did to deserve the psychic flogging colloquially referred to as “popular culture”? And then some mornings you do it all over again despite thinking you simply can’t put yourself through another… freaking… pace… of… any of it? And then there’s that one rare morning when the dawn is just the right hue, the coffee is just the right flavor, and the culture gods you thought long dead or absentee at best actually signal their interest in satisfying you, if even for only five and a half minutes and preceded by a 30-second ad? This is that morning.
That’s really all there is to say about Werner Herzog’s appearance on Monday’s edition of The Colbert Report, wherein the filmmaker spoke of the artwork, mythology, and radioactive albino crocodiles populating his splendid 3-D documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams. This is the anti-Weiner we all need right about now.

Not so long ago, 3-D technology was being trumpeted as the future of movies. Now that that future has become business as usual, with a new 3-D picture (or a retrofitted one) opening nearly every other week — and with the radioactive glow of Avatar growing dimmer with the passage of time — what’s left to look forward to? The answer may lie in 3-D films made by genius weirdos like Werner Herzog.
Herzog’s latest documentary, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, doesn’t bring 3-D to dazzling new heights. Instead, it uses this relatively new technology to burrow a little deeper, both literally and figuratively, into history — into the nature of mankind, even. Herzog and his small team take their cameras into Chauvet Cave, a warren in France that, until its discovery in 1994, had been sealed off by a fallen rock face for more than 20,000 years. The marks and drawings on the walls inside — which include all manner of animal likenesses, as well as polka-dot arrangements of human handprints — are more than 30,000 years old, more ancient than the perhaps more famous drawings at Lascaux.
Chauvet Cave is not open to visitors, and only select researchers have been allowed inside. It was a stroke of brilliance on someone’s part to let Herzog in, not just with his cameras but with his running loop of impressionistic patter. He wonders aloud if his crew’s minimal lighting, flickering against the surface of these strange and marvelous etchings, is anything like the shifting glow of…
